enrique_r.
I have 2 pawn shops in my town that I go every now & then to see if I can find a deal.
Well today I found that they have a 80-200mm f/4 AI-s in very nice condition fo $40.00.
I know it won't meter with my D90, but will it work with a D700 ( my soon to be xmas present to myself)?

luis_g
Enrique, make sure you look through the archives here for checking out a used lens, unless you already know, of course. Take a good small flashlight to check on fungus, oil on the diaphragm blades, and that they open & close w/o binding and more.
rick_donnelly
An excellent lens, with very high ratings for its optics. Add a nikon 6T closeup lens and it becomes a darn good macro approaching 1:1. If the glass is clean, go for it, as it will work fine with all the newer pro level nikon DSLRs.

Michael R Freeman
Easily worth three times that price if it truly is in excellent condition (tight zoom with no "creep"). And yes, it is 100% compatible with a D700 in A and M exposure modes, with all three metering modes.
enrique_r.
I'm going back tomorrow (hope it's still there) & I'll make sure I do every test & check everything I can thing of B4 buying. If I mess up I'm out $40, as long as it doesn't screw up my camera.
The Glass looked great, didn't seem to creep.
david_klaffenbach
I have a Tamron 70-210/3.8-4, and while I don't use it a lot as I shoot too much moving stuff (or my MF skills aren't good enough) I really like the size if I'm going to be on my feet all day and don't want to haul much. There are no modern lenses like it (in the Nikon camp anyway).
Michael R Freeman

"... as long as it doesn't screw up my camera."

It is perfectly safe to use on EVERY Nikon film or digital SLR ever made. It won't meter on your D90, but you can still use it in M exposure mode, guesstimate the appropriate f/stop + shutter speed settings, and then refine your exposure settings using the histogram.
