recent opinions on upsizing

Recommended Posts

<p> have been away a while and a search of the archives on upsizing is quite old except for a suggestion for viaginatpr 6.oh. . . . I last found advice suggesting using my PSCS2 and in image size, select bicubic smoother for upsizing to my preferrd 13x19 and bicubic sharper-for down sizing for the web. I had purchased a few addon but settld on PS bicubic smoother is there a new magic addon or program I should consider?</p>

<p>jerry,</p>

<p>Consensus seems to be that it really doesn’t matter for enlargements up to about 200%,

and past that it’s largely image-dependent — that is, you’ll have one image

that does best with one method, another is awful with that method but just fine with another, and so

on.</p>

<p>To make matters <em>better,</em> most modern printer drivers do all their enlargement with

some form of bicubic resampling. If you do all your printing on a 13″ printer, just hit

“Print” without resizing, and stop worrying about it. And any quality print shop that

does large prints will have somebody who will personally take care of the resizing and do a better

job than you will, so just hand over the file and stop worrying about it.</p>

<p><em>If</em> you have your own large format printer <em>and</em> you’re feeding it

images that work out to native resolutions of less than 100 ppi, <em>then</em> you need to start

worrying — but probably only to the extent that you should at least get a copy of

GenuineFractals and see if that or one of the three bicubic methods does better for a particular

print.</p>

<p>Cheers,</p>
