setting up vuescan to correctly batch scan 35mm negs

Recommended Posts

Hello
I just started in with scanning my colour negs with an epson 4490. I really enjoy it, and have been getting better results than the prints I've gotten back from a supposedly great lab.

My question is, can someone explain to me how to set up correct cropping for batch scanning a strip of 35mm negs??
There's all this XY Crop and crop offset and everything, but it's not working out properly at all. I set it up perfectly for the first frame, and then it's off for the 2nd.
Yes i've read the section of the online manual, but I need someone to actually explain how to set this up to function correctly, because the marching ants are in the wrong places, and doing one at a time is obviously very slow.

Cheers

this is the reason i use the epson scan program for my v700 and 4990's. It works so much better
for batch scanning. And, it works quite well...sure you have to tweek things a bit but i had to do
that with the trial version of vuescan too. My vote goes to epson scan software

Hi,

On the input tab under advanced setting (click on the 'more' button) you should see "Fame Offset" and "Frame Spacing"

The formula Vuescan seems to apply is something like this...

z = FO + (FS * (FN-1))
Where:
z is the amount of film advanced into scanner
FO is Frame Offset
FS is Frame Spacing
FN is Frame Number

Basically the Frame Offset is the amount of "leader' you have in front of the first frame. And the Frame Spacing is the distance between the start of one frame and and start of the next.
Assuming you are working in mm. You should start with these setting as your default Frame Offset = 1, Frame Spacing = 38. That should get you close. If Frame Spacing needs to be changed only change it a little bit, like 38.06 or down to 37.9. Big changes will give you very confusing results in later frames.

good luck
