nigel_craig
Just wondered, before I hit the "Purchase" button on Vuescan (OK, not a major investment ), do you think Nikon will update Nikon scan to run in Vista 64 bit ever/soon (not soon = never to me) Its hard to believe that with these scanners still on the market, they haven't done that since many potential Win-using customers forced down 64 bit route to use enoughRAM in applications.
ronald_moravec1
Never. They are getting out of the scanner business which is becoming smaller and smaller.
I am thinking of getting one just for if/ when my current one dies.
stwrtertbsratbs5
I don't think Nikon is trying to get out of the small, but profitable, scanner business. If they wanted out of the business, they'd either sell it or shutter it. They simply have too much on their plate. So scanners are made in infrequent batches and scanner software updates are given lower priority than new DSLR launches.

But, hey, I'm an optimist.
sknowles
If you're buying the Vuescan, or even Silverfast's software, why worry about Nikon's software? Considering Nikon won't update their software for Apple past Leopard (10.5.x) I don't see why they would continue with a PC version past what's currently available. It's hard to doubt the market is still there, but it's not enough of one to warrant the costs of software development. Personally, I'd go with Silverfast's as it will continue with both PC and Mac versions written for each (current) scanner's hardware.

But hey, I'm a pessimist.
norman_smith1
The reply I had, ten days ago, from Nikon UK, when I asked as to future Nikon support for both Coolscan and Capture NX, within a 64 bit operating environment, was as follows:-
"Nikon currently does not have plans to support 64 bit version of Windows XP or Vista."
stwrtertbsratbs5
I doubt that 64 bits will make much difference in speed for the way I use Nikon Scan. I capture linear scans as positives to capture maximum information. Everything else is done in other software. So I don't mind running a dula boot. Or I may test VMWare at some point to see how that works.
jtk
IMO Nikonscan and Vuescan are essentially identical for mounted slides (unless you actually believe multi-pass contributes)..but if you're scanning strip film, Nikonscan is far more efficient than Vuescan because it positions frames instantly, accurately, brainlessly...whereas Vuescan frame positioning is a continually frustrating guessing game, especially if your film comes from different cameras (eg thin framelines of Leica Barnacks, erratic framelines of funky/plastic SLRs, proper/consistent framelines of Canon F1 and top Nikons.
gary_early
There is a discussion on Nikonians about achieving this. Check the "scanning and color" forum. I am not sure if it is "legal" to post a URL here (couldn't find the rules when I looked), but here it is:
http://www.nikonians.org/forums/dcboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=198&topic_id=8303&mesg_id=8303&page=
Good luck!
Moderator: Sorry if I broke any rules here.....

sverre_edin
I use the VueScan scanner driver to successfully run the Minolta 32-bits old software in Vista 64.
Any Nikon Scan users using a similar setup with success?
