Falling for my iPhone

Recommended Posts

Although I've tried making aesthetically pleasing photographs with my iPhone over the course of well over a year, nothing really clicked until I headed to the Sierra Nevada Mountains last week. The epiphany for me came when I stopped worrying about what I couldn't do and concentrated on the image.

A few shots from my trip plus several more made the past few days are here:

I was a bit put off by some of the negative comments - about me, the photographs, and the use of anything "less" than a DSLR, and heartened by the kinder comments.

I don't dig too much on the fake Polaroid surrounds... call me a Polaroid purist ;) but otherwise cool shots... in a few years you won't be able to tell a cell-phone camera image from any other PNS image! Some of these images are quite wonderful! The iPhone has many technical limitations, but honestly, what camera doesn't? I don't know of any DSLR's that slip into a shirt pocket and let you send snapshots to your friends seconds after you take them, and that's really what the device is all about anyway.

To the snobs on your post who commented on how a DSLR would have been a better choice.... fools... don't they know that the only REAL photography is Large Format transparency?

Well, you can still do the "dropped shadows", as you call it, which i think you mean the fall off or fade out at the edges and corners , but try it with a standard border , not the faux Polaroid one.

And know that there are many other forum category that are for non SLR users. Even this one and even the Digital Cameras forum would be the best place i can think of, as many people there don't use DSLRs .
I use my cell phone alot as its somthing i always have with me , but i have my batter cameras when i want to take those nice planned shots.
Tell me , what are the specs on your iPhone camera ? like mega pixels and the focal length?

The 3Gs comes with a 3 megapixel camera. I'm guessing the focal length is about what would be normal for a full-frame DSLR or film camera, about 50mm.

I have taken quite a few shots with the 'camera' function of my cell phone lately. The
sunlight on golden tree leaves caught my eye and my cell phone was the only 'camera'
I always had with me. I am impressed with some of the results. It ain't my Nikon, but
much better than no camera at all.
Best regards,
• 1 month later...

I find a cell phone camera a very good camera because its almost always with me. Sometimes the crappyness of the shots adds for an artistic effect. A lot of the time I just have it set on the "black and white" setting to help hide the low contrast and things.
Check out the latest post as of this time on ryancphotography.blogspot.com for some of my cell phone shots(this is my very, very dated photoblog, so please dont judge my skills on it).
