mvw photo
My 7D has locked up a number of times - no reason I can discern - twice this evening.

I documented this (and my other tests and reviews) on my photo teaching blog, but I have been told off for mentioning that blog here. Not sure I understand that (especially since i pay here) - but oh well, it is what it is. Anyway, it did lock up twice today. Anyone had the same?

mvw photo
Oh and of course this is with lenses that work fine with my 1D MkIII and 1Ds MkIII (that is the first thing I thought of).
sattler123
Call Canon or return the camera - you might have gotten a lemon!
mvw photo
Yes, if I see no other reports here, I will do that. CPS registered, so it should be OK - but I'll wait for replacement stock to arrive first!
r_smith2
Michael glad to see you got your 7d but too bad about the problems. Have you had a chance to test your 7D as the master flash to see if it will fire either a 580EXII or 430EXII in wireless manual mode in 1/3 stop increments? I am suspicioning that this fault with the wireles system in manual mode is in the slave side of the flash and not in the signal coming from the master. I was hoping that maybe, just maybe if it was a master signal problem that Canon would have fixed it in the 7D.
PuppyDigs

Anyway, it did lock up twice today. Anyone had the same?

I've had a 7D for a week and so far smooth sailing: no problems whatsoever. Friggen rips. Okay, I'd like a RAW driver for Aperture. Can't get ECF or shiftable DEP mode to work. Oh, shit, I think Canon omitted those features...
Sometimes the light’s all shining on me. hjoseph7
What do you mean by locking up ? is there an error message on the LCD, are you unable to squeeze the shutter. Does every function shut down ? what exactly does locked up mean ?
paul_b.1
Wait one month until Canon will release the new firmware, and all your problems will be solved. Same thing happens to me with the 50D ...(mine has locked up in 7 different ways , with no apparent reason)
Marc453
First recharge the battery fully and try it again. Second, try different lenses. Third and finally, take it back to the store and get another one.
kin_lau
I've had mine for about 2 weeks. No problems, Canon and Sigma lenses, original and 3rd party battery, probably about 2,000 shutter actuations and 15min's of video so far. Sandisk Extreme III and A-Data CF's, iso from 100 to 12,800.
mvw photo
From my blog:
"I came back to it ten minutes after reinserting the CF card and reformatting it. And I noticed that the LCD on the top was still on. A quick check: sure enough: no response to any button or switch – not even to the “off” switch. So again, take out the battery."
Yes, with full battery. And I've tried various lenses and of course these lenses work fine on my other cameras (a 1D MkIII and a 1Ds MkIII).
Hoping for a firmware fix soon...

steve_dunn2
Canon just released a firmware update for the 7D. If you're not already at 1.0.9 (dunno what versions they've been shipping, but I've heard not all 7Ds have shipped with the same version), you might want to upgrade, even if the description of the upgrade doesn't specifically refer to your problem. Here's the page with the new firmware (along with a description of what's changed and how to do the upgrade).
les_warden
Bought my 7D last Sat (10/31/09). Sitting here going through manual to know all the things about the camera. Picked it up to try the live mode and it was locked up. Not sure when it locked or if I had some button combo to put it in the lockup mode. Lockup was same as some of the other posts I've read....nothing accessible, no button response, on/off had no response, etc. Took out the battery, put it back in and all is well. My firmware version is 1.0.9....sigh. Looking for firmware version 1.0.9a or 1.0.10.

jake_reinig
I've had my Canon 7D for about two weeks now, and used it on only its second shoot today. I had an identical problem to what Michael Willems describes: the camera was unresponsive with no buttons working. I checked the LCD, which was on, and that also did not respond to dial turns, button presses, etc. I turned the power switch to off but the LCD remained fully powered with all settings displayed. I removed the batteries, reinserted them, and the camera worked fine after that.

At the time I was using a 24-70mm L-series lens with the Canon battery grip attached. No flash attached or wireless flash triggering, and about 65 degrees out in nice weather.

My camera shipped with fw 1.1.0, so there's currently no update available.

I'll contact Canon shortly and see what they say, but thought I'd pop in and mention having the same problem.
alexkropp
Hi Michael,
I've had the same problem with my new canon 7d. It locks up completely for no reason. It doesn't seem to matter what lenses I am using or how I'm using the camera. The off switch doesn't even work when this happens. All functions simply freeze.
I've sent the camera to canon twice, and they still haven't fixed the problem. I'm pretty frustrated, but will be sending the camera back to them yet again. They say they've never heard of this problem before.
Alex Kropp
