mike_weber4
I was taking photos today with my Canon Digital Rebel 300D (obviously a pretty old camera now) and out of the blue all my photos started coming out black, like I was taking photos with the lens cap on. I've tried using multiple lenses, but the result is always the same- totally black. I've tried different modes and settings and I get the same result. I hear the shutter click and everything feels fine.
Any ideas about what broke? If so, any idea how much it costs to fix if it's even repairable?
Thanks,
Mike
joannasfoto
I have heard about something like that- haven't experience it myself. And I think- when I've heard about it- it was shutter. Did you try different lens? Just in case?
mike_weber4
Yep, tried different lenses. :( I think it happened on shutter actuation 26756, but I'm figuring out that number isn't always a sure thing from what I've read.
cabbiinc
Have you tried plugging the camera into the computer and using EOS Utility for tethered shooting just to rule out the memory card?

Can the 300D shoot tethered?
gerhard_selke1
I had the same problem. It was the shutter.
mike_weber4
I received a few suggestions to take off the lens, set the camera to a slow shutter speed and watch inside. If the mirrors flip up and the image sensor is exposed, that's a good sign. Unfortunately, the black curtain in front of my image sensor is not moving anymore.
Looks like I need a new camera.
benbangerter
"Looks like I need a new camera." And that's not necessarily a bad thing! Digital SLRs have come a long way in six years.
phule
Also, the used market for last years models is pretty good. It's not a bad way to upgrade without paying a premium.
sattler123
Look at a slightly used 40D - it will be a huge upgrade for you at a very reasonable price.

Marc453
Try charging the battery first. Second, tell your wife or girlfriend. Third mention your birthday or Christmas. (Get lots of camera brochures and magazines and leave them around her stuff.) Fourth talk about getting a new camera. Take her with you to look at a new camera. Note: While this may result in you getting a new camera without paying for it, be aware that this technique also works in reverse, and women are very good at it.
mike_weber4
I've already started the campaign :) Also I'm charging the battery now just in case by some miracle that will fix it.
