Macro for EOS 1000d

Can anybody recommend a Macro EF-S lens for a Canon EOS 1000d?<br>

<p>There's only one Canon EF-S macro lens and that's the 60mm.</p>

<p>However, there are numerous other EF macro lenses that will work with the 1000D. Canon offers: 100mm f/2.8, the new 100mm f/2.8 IS, the 50mm f/2.5 and two others.</p>

<p>There are also third party options from Sigma and Tamron.</p>

<p>The 1000D can use both EF-S and EF macro lens. Canon's Macro lens range from 50mm to 180mm with built-in magnification from 1:2 (1/2X) to 5:1 (5X). Macro lens is just like other lens, one select it base on needs and price. As far as new toy are concern :-), Canon just released a 100mm macro with IS and fancy glass. Tamron just release an EFS only f2 60mm. </p>

Bob Atkins' writeup neglects to mention the Sigma 70/2.8 macro, which has been out for some time, and is one of the sharpest lens (across the frame) currently in production. And of course there is the new Tamron 60/2, which is not yet available. If you upgrade to full-frame DSLR in the future, money spent on a small-circle lens will be wasted.

<p>Since macros are generally stopped way down in use, a faster macro (like an F/2) may not be worth extra to you. Sigma is a sharp lens, but as Canon bodies upgrade you may need to send it back to be re-chipped and if the lens goes out of production, Sigma may not upgrade it. Tamron makes a fine lens. And the Canon lenses are excellent. Personally, I would not go with an EF-S lens. The Canon 100mm is a great lens and a good length on a cropped body. Nice to be able to use it on the 5D MKII that you have always wanted....</p>

<p>If Oliver doesn't have a high quality portrait lens / short tele then Tamron 60/2 could make a lot of sense. Samples I saw were exceptional even wide open.</p>

<p>One could buy one (Tamron 60) and shoot all the samples one want. EOS version are in stock hence image samples are in the web.<br>
