kel_madics
ive been trying to figure out if my 24-70 at 2.8 is soft. i am not sure if its dof that causing this softness at 2.8 but its seems pretty sharp stopped down to f/4 but is a tad less sharper at the center compared to my other 24-105 at the center, which i think should be about right. so if you guys have photos of 24-70 using f/2.8 would you mind sharing? i have a 5d with a +3 sharpness and +1 contrast.
and ohh. its so hard to take an ultra sharp photo at 2.8 without the flash using 1/100+ speed. i dont know why but i hope to have IS with this.

ill post photos later.
savagesax
Can you post an image? It is possible that your lens can be soft at 2.8. In the past Canon has had some issues with this lens and you may have gotten one of them.
Spearhead
Sharp enough for you? I shoot for hours at f2.8 at these events, even with slight motion blur like here the lens is still sharp.

Music and Portraits Blog: Life in Portugal
kel_madics
its sharp but im looking for a pic thats 100% crop, best would be a stationary face. i would know if its sharp if i can see all the pores popping out without extra sharpening from my in camera settings.
lucafoto
Yowwwch! for above photo. Great use of the 24-70L. If you are curious about seeing photos shot with that lens at f2.8, just use flickr search:

Great lens, quality build, it is my carry around lens on my 5D.

elliot1
Side-by-side tests with a known good lens will probably be the most useful way to determine whether your lens is working properly or not. Or you can send it to Canon for a check-up.

FWIW, my copy is exceptionally sharp at f2.8.
kel_madics
how do you think Canon would charge me for this checkup without warranty? thing is i dont want to send to canon if this is understandably normal.
i will do a side by side testing later using 70-200 IS, 24-105, and 24-70 and will let you know about the results. so we can all judge.
elliot1
In re-reading my comments, I should have stated "with a know good copy of the 24-70 lens". Sorry about that.

mendel_leisk
FWIW, I find my 24-70 center sharpness to be slightly ahead, or at worst even, with my 24-105. In the corners it's consistantly sharper than the '105. Since you also have both lens, I'd suggest some semi-controlled comparitive shots. Square-on shots of bookcases work for me. Try different focal lengths, and do your best to get the same field of view with both lens. Then process and view 100% with Photoshop, toggle between the two.
calin_deac
I always considered the 24-70 the best portrait zoom lens especially on crop senzor. I know that everybody thinks 17-55 is better on crop. I for one don't. Most of my wedding pictures range from 40 to 70, meaning 65 to 112 in FF format. I barely use it between 24-30. This lens give me 90, 100, and 112 at 2.8. Neither 17-55 nor the popular 70-200 2.8 delivers me that.
