bob_osullivan
This is "quicksand". If you start making concessions this early on, they will continue to require more concessions. "Well, we think the work is only worth X$$ ".

A successful wedding shoot requires a partnership between you and the couple, not a subservient relationship. They should make their choice of a photographer based on the quality of your work, which they have seen, and your reputation for delivering the goods. Once the choice is made, they need to pay for the services in the manner that is stated in your contract. If they don't agree to your terms, you both should move on as no partnership exists.

I let people pay later for hard goods like albums. For example a couple of moderate means can pay just for the shoot and prints in advance, and maybe get an album from me for their first anniversary. But aside from that I need to be paid properly just like they pay all the other vendors.

I think these days people think they should be able to get a photographer cheaply because there are so many more competitors now thanks to the digital technology. The problem is that while there are many more vendors presenting themselves as pro photographers, I truly believe there are far less "QUALIFIED" professional photographers than there were say back in the 80's and 90's. We are still worth paying for. This is readily apparent by simply comparing the wedding albums of your friends with the albums of your parent's generations friends.
