Happy Wednesday everyone. Already so many great pics.
Last weekend's reenactment of the Battle at Antietam was an action filled demonstration especially when the Confederate mounted unit entered the foray to cover the retreat of the Confederate soldiers while re-enforcements arrived to stave off an assault of Union troops. This action was the spectators' favorite. Everyone loves horses!

00UROd-171065984.jpg.35088ca3e81611212c515b2ed170b8a2.jpg

The kind of image I have 'been looking for' for some time - recently the opportunity was there - more of these more 'graphic' nature images will likely follow..!

Good Morning everyone! I took this shot last summer, but finally got around to doing some touch up work on it last week. It is from a draft horse competition in Slayton, Minnesotta. For those of you unfamiliar w/ these animals they are quite large weighing in at close to 2,000lbs. The final judging was of 6 horse teams and for the awards ceremony they had all 12 teams in the ring. 72 2,000lb animals is quite a sight. I'll check back in later to comment.

00UROw-171071584.jpg.904fdf766c61f6bf041b5a504a6bade6.jpg

Taken in the last early morning minutes before a 5k run's 1,500 participants broke loose down a closed city street. I was lining up and metering into the very bright sun - in anticipation of capturing the lead runners - when two young dudes on a single skateboard claimed the empty pavement for themselves.

00URPi-171083584.thumb.jpg.5950845b1b064c1ce24b2448704f906d.jpg

There are so many wonderful images!! This is my second time on this thread, and I really look forward to Wednesday.
The following was taken at the local zoo. It was starting to rain, I had just taken the camera off the tripod, and then came across these guys. I know I can not hand hold , and get a sharp picture, but I just had to try . It was also my first time using a TC. Oh how I wish this had not been so soft.

This week we went to watch the bats, which were not nearly polite enough to slow down for some portraits. My intent was to try to catch them with the strobe as they poured out from under the bridge, but I had to guess the distance for focus and just hope to catch them in focus. I have a few images where they are (nearly) in focus, and some with hundreds in the picture, but in going through them, I liked this less concrete capture - this is a close crop from one of the pictures, and I like the almost X-ray feel to the bat as he stretches after a long hot day sleeping. ISO 800 on the D-300. Color removed in PS.

00URQB-171087684.jpg.d2ee7070001f6a1faae7d0a169c05b57.jpg

We have a nesting pair of loons on our lake... Eastman Lake, Grantham NH, a great spot.
I have been trying to photograph the loons and their two chicks on and off all summer. It's very difficult. The adult head is very black, with dark red eyes; it's easy to get a silhouette. And, white areas of feathers, the reflection off the beak, it's easy to be over exposed. And, focusing? Hand-holding 300 f/4 or 55-200 VR in a kayak or canoe. This has been one of the most difficult photo projects I've ever attempted.
The success rate is low. The chicks are growing. What started as tiny grey fur-balls are now 15 pound birds. They still race to take food from the adults, but the chicks now show many adults behaviors and making moves towards flying.
He's a shot of one of the chicks... probably better to say an immature loon, from late August.

00URQG-171089584.jpg.7b74f565ca7bbbd72dec96631fb33b4d.jpg
