Facebook - (how) do you use it?

Hi everyone,

I know somebody else posted a question about Facebook a couple of days ago, but this one is slightly different.

A bride recently asked me whether I had a fanpage on Facebook, as she wanted to become a fan. I had never thought about this possibility before, as I was put off by the policy in their terms of use that says they can use their users´ photos. (I realize now that this could be more or less remedied by using watermarks)

But now that I had a closer look at it, I thought that creating a Facebook fanpage looked like a useful and very cheap marketing tool - the only thing is, I´m not really sure how to use it! So I can put (watermarked!) photos in the galleries. And I can post news to my "fans", right? So does it work mostly like an alternative mailing list?

Are there any other uses? How do you use your Facebook fanpage? Would you recommend making one? I´d love to hear your thoughts and expierence!

Thanks a lot!
Daniel

Hi Daniel, I have a fan page on Facebook and it's been very helpful. You can customize the page in many different ways and you can even check where most of your traffic is coming from. You can create discussions, post events, update fans, tag people, get comments or not. It is very easy to navigate around it. I do recommend getting one, since nowadays a lot of people are connected through community sites like these or twitter, etc. (you can also link twitter to your facebook page, so when you update your facebook fan page status or add new photos, Twitter automatically updates, which is great)
Good luck!

Sadly, I received and my ID has been used by spammers on Facebook directing contacts to explicit porn sites and I dont know what else. I sent out an apology email and promptly locked down my my profile to no contacts and no public visibility. The few jobs I got thru my Facebook presence do not make it worth it to alienate my contacts with the lack of security provided by the site.
Personally I would Not recommend using Facebook professionally. Others may have had better experiences.

Facebook is a great marketing tool. If used correctly, it can be very helpful for your business. Check out the August issue of Professional Wedding Photographer for some great advice on Facebook.
I use it to post recent work, send out updates once a week or so about what I am working on. Some brides live on facebook.

The true value of facebook is it's ability to tag users in pictures. Become friends with your brides/grooms and when you post photos of them to your facebook fan pages galleries, every single one of their friends will be notified and directed to your fan page. We also use being friends with the couple as an opportunity for them to learn about who we are and for us to learn about them. It goes much deeper than a simple conversation can. I continue to have contact with past bride's and groom's all the time. A little drip marketing.

Plus, we have awesome wedding couples and want to continue to stay in touch afterward, they are tons of fun!
