Olympus FL-50R Flash and the E-30

I finally got to start testing my new flash. I figured it would be easiest to use the TTL for off camera flash, and I'm all for easy. First the details. The camera is set up for RC mode and the on-camera flash is up and the flash is set up for RC mode.

I ran three sets of tests. For all three sets the camera is about 10 ft (3M) from the subject and the flash is about 8 ft (2.5M) and about 45 degrees left of the camera.

On the first set I started with the flash on the floor pointing up at the 75 degree angle and I shot with the diffuser and without and for some I put an object in front of the on-camera light to block it from lighting the subject and I shot with the room lights on and off. All of the exposures were quite good and similar which seems to indicate that the TTL feature was working as it should. Note of interest: The subject was only a few inches from the background wall. I got much more defined shadows when the diffuser was ON the flash which is opposite of what I would have expected. I'm guessing the light was reflected out of the side of the diffuser causing the shadows on the wall.

On the Second set I put the flash on a tripod so it was about 18" from the ceiling. The alterations I made here were the angle which went from the same 75 degree pointed toward the ceiling to 0 degree pointed toward the subject and again room lights on and off. Again, the room lights - which, by the way were not very bright - seemed to make no difference. However, as the flash was tilted from 75, then 60, then 45 and finally 0 degrees the exposure went from slightly under to clearly over exposed. Why would the TTL not keep these exposures fairly close? AND AGAIN the diffuser seemed to have the exact opposite effect of what you would expect, other than in the final set with the flash pointed at the subject.

On the Third test The flash remained the same as the second set (on the tripod) and the angle remained at the 75 degree setting (pointing up at the ceiling) with no diffuser. The only changes on this set were to the camera TTL settings and the on- flash settings. For the camera I exposed with the Flash Intesity Value at 0.0, 0.7 and 2.0 and on the Flash I changed the numbers to the right of the channel and group indicators to 0.0, 0.7 and 2.0 and I shot them both coordinated - so that both the camera and flash were at the same settings - and also so only the camera and so only the flash was set to each setting. In this case all of the photos came out equal so none of the adjustments or settings on either the camera or the flash made any difference. Why no change? Incidentally, nowhere in the flash documentation could I find what those numbers next to the right of the Channel and group indicators are for in wireless mode. They are adjustable from -3.0 to +3.0 in 1/3 increments. Where can I find out what they are supposed to do?

If you would like me to email you the images from these tests I will be happy to do that.

I apologize for the length of this post/question, but I'm anxious to use the flash to it's maximum capabilities.

Thanks for any help!!!
