davey morgan photography
My husband and I are considering joining the Better Business Bureau, but have read a lot of mixed messages about whether it is a good decision. Most people tend to think it won't matter that much. I wanted to know if anyone has any experience with BBB and whether being a member has benefited their business.
hooman_b
I can't think of any time I've ever even thought of calling the BBB for anything (much less anyone else I know). I think you're better of spending $25-$50 per wedding web site for an upgraded listing. The BBB called me last year and said it was $300 to join. $300! To me its like the phone book, dead and gone :)
frans_waterlander
My only experience with the BBB is from the perspective of a teed off consumer. When I wanted to file a complaint about a particular car dealer I was told that the filing fee for a complaint was $25. That was the end of my interest in the BBB.

hjoseph7
You can put the BBB logo on your website, but you will probably be one of the first photographers to do so...
bill_mussett1
Marissa, Instead of the BBB consider joining your local Chamber of Commerce. You'll make contacts that could lead to more business and business by referral, and to me referrals carry more value than the BBB logo.
leicaglow
It may add some credibility, if you're newer to the consumer photography market and need it, but otherwise they're pretty worthless. Your prospective customer may not know the difference though. The BBB reminds me of those "Who's Who" directories that you can get your name into, then buy a copy of to impress your friends, I suppose. It's nothing more than a pay to play scenario. I might add I've known a lot of crooked outfits with BBB logos and listings.
pete_harlan1
Lot's of opinions Marissa.
Here's mine.

There is a old business adage, "Perception is reality"

Ya..If your web site says "Member of the BBB" it tends to lend credence and adds "perception" to your clientel'. Many people will "Perceive" you as having nothing to hide and have nothing but happy customers.

Downside? If you do have complaints filed with the BBB, that may hurt your business.

Old legal phrase "The thing speaks for itself"

If the (risk Vs Reward) marketing decision is beneficial, go for it.
aimee_pieters
You'd probably be better off joining PPA. It's about the same cost per year and there are lots of benefits including indemnification which is insurance to protect you under certain circumstances, educational opportunities, conventions, tradeshows, Super Mondays, etc.
It's also nice to display your certificate and logo on your website....-Aimee
rick_m.
Forget the BBB. Spend the money on an organization that will work for you. Paying for the BBB is like paying for the other guy's lawyer to sue you.
