Outstanding Cannon service

I just wanted to post a message regarding the outstanding service I recently received from the Canon Irvine (CA) Service Center. I have a 70-200/2.8LIS and a 500/4LIS both of which are just out of warranty. The manual focusing ring on the former felt gritty from sand due to frequent use on the beach. I wanted a inspection/recalibration of the latter. I dropped off the lenses on a Thursday and was informed that even though the lenses were just out of warranty, there would be no charge for the service. Cannon replaced the mechanical chassis on the 70-200 and cleaned/recalibrated the 500. Both lenses shipped out on the following Tuesday by FEDEX overnight to Northern California and I received them on Wednesday. Now THAT is SERVICE. I just wish the other iconic Japanese four letter brand had a fraction of the service Cannon provides.

My 4 years out of warranty 70-200 4L was blurry on the left side. Canon Hawaii fixed it for free and, hell, the counter girl was cute and even flirted with me. The repair took less than 10 days and is now sharp as a tack. They also fixed the reflex mirror for free on my 2 years out of warranty 5D. Canon service is has been friggen kickass for me so far.

Sometimes the light’s all shining on me. Other times I can barely see.

This makes me think maybe a move to the west coast or Hawaii might be needed for decent Canon CS/repair..my personal NJ repair experience has been atrocious. Next time ( if there is one since that will only be for under warranty gear that is impossible to find in some other brand) I'll be trying Irvine for sure.

I am glad your experience with Canon service was positive. I have had 4 lenses go back to Canon for softness issues, and the service was fast(Irvine CA), and they were near perfect when returned. However, my 5D MarkII has had a problem with focus using the center AF area(see thread in this forum) and is now on it's 3rd trip in and I specified that I wanted NJ as Irvine keeps insisting that there is nothing wrong, or It's me doing something wrong(the newest tech support person is much better). It's enough that I have put off buying the last 3 lenses I need in case I have to start over and sell all the Canon equipment and go with a Nikon system(I came from long time use of Leica RF's).

Neutral to negative experience, with Canon Canada. Just the total lack of service centres on the west coast is very frustrating.

One experience, we had a Rebel XT with what looked to be electronic issues: it would take a few shots, then stop. Removing the battery would remedy it. They would not quote a price. Upon shipping it (to a service centre in another province), and before they even looked at it, I was quoted the "standard" charge, which turned out to be within $100 of the price of a new, replacement camera.

I told them to ship it back. They are too big, too bureaucratic.

I too can commend Canon Irvine for great service. They replaces my cracked body on my 5D and repaired a over zoom issue on my 24-70 quickly and for a lot less than I expected.

I've had a number of repairs at Canon NJ over the year, and have always had excellent service. There seems to be a few whiners/immature users, who post the same problem/complaint with Canon service on numerous websites. If I was so unhappy with Canon produts/service I would just switch to another brand. I'm sure everyone would be happy if you did.

I always thought it's better to repair some minor things yourself instead of sending it to canon. It's obvious that you're going to do it a lot better sicnce it's your camera. So if you need to just change a part - order it and then all you need to do is to change a part (e.g. screen). If it's something more complicated then I'd show you're disappointed and I'd keep on insisting so that they repair it properly.

I was never disappointed with canon repair service - they are usually very helpful if you're nice to them ;) On the other hand - I always bring my equipment personally and explain EXACTLY but politely what I want them to do. Never had any problems.
