Do I need to move up to the 1D iii or keep my 50D?

This question is for all the sport (more so Pro’s). I am a professional photographer shooting mainly weddings and new related events. However over the past year I have been receiving more and more sports assignments and see this area of photography becoming more of a main stream. Assignments on such as NHL hockey, NCAA football, basketball and NHRA Drag races and just finished the AMA Superbikes races. I have been shooting the sports assignments with my two new Canon 50D’s with one having a 28-300L f3.5-5.6 IS or 70-200L f2.8 IS and the other with Canon 400L f2.8 IS. On this past event (AMA Superbikes) I was speaking with a ESPN Photographer who was shooting with the Canon 1D iii and stating how much better it was capturing fast moving sporting events. Now I have had no problems capturing anything with my 50D’s but will say focus may or may-not be dead on all the time. Which I hear that is not the case with the 1D iii.

So my question is: Do I need to up grade to the 1D iii. Will I have a better % rate of in focus frames. Is the 1D iii that much better. It is a older camera and the 50D’s have the latest and greatest is software..

Weddings: I should 100% 5D’s. Great camera for wedding, but much to show for sports.

Thanks all!

Based on my experience with the 1D Mk2 shooting flying and running critters, I, too, would say "yes." You have the ability via custom functions to change the focus speed. You have 8 frames/sec (or 10 fps on the Mk3). If price is an object a gently used Mk2 might be just the thing.

Hi Brian,
I'm surf photographer and I'll tell you that no one could be comparated to Mark III, its realy amazing.
10 fps its wonderfull when you shoot sports and will be the diference between a photo published/selled.
I noticed a lot of photographer using 40D (and i use sometimes) but its a turtle and just can be used as a backup.
I suggest you to buy a Mark III and be happy.
ps: Mark III its so f***king sharp dude. you will enjoy.

Am using 1DMkIIn models for sports work. Looked long and hard at the 1DMkIII models but the auto focus problems reported by many have kept me shooting with the older models.
Some seem to do just fine while others go back to Canon time and time and time again trying to get the Autofocus working properly. I ran into a full time bird photographer at a National Wildlife Refuge a few weeks ago and he let me shoot with his MkIII. Really nice. Fast and clean images. Trouble is, it has been back to Canon three times before the focus performed properly. That is three times in a six month period.
I know not all have the problem but will wait for the MkIV or whatever before upgrading. Too many got the MkIII and ended up going back to the MkII models for accurate AF work. I don't want to take the chance on getting a bad one with so many having had them. Right now they seem to be the best sales tool Nikon has. Many have switched to Nikon after finding the AF problems cropping up.
Either way you are miles ahead getting the 1D series over any 30/40/50D body. Much better AF. Better all around. Built better as well. Will remind you of the old F1 in how solid it is.
