Strange repeat file naming on D700

<p>I have used my D700 for 9 months now with no real problems but yesterday I noticed something odd (or maybe I am doing something wrong) - I uploaded 300+ new images from the CF card onto my hard drive and (by accident) noticed that they were the same series of file numbers (exactly the same letters/number sequence) as some (unrelated) files I had taken and uploaded 6 months ago. In other words, the camera is repeating file numbers (eg _DAV5768.NEF). <br>

In the custom menu D6 I have the 'File Sequence No' set to 'on' - is this the culprit, or what?<br>

Any ideas or thoughts very welcome.<br>

<p>If you went past 9,999, your image numbering reset to zero and started over. Just happened with my D300.</p>

<p>Right, there are only 4 digits in _DAVnnnn.NEF so that there are only 10000 unique numbers. Apparently you have captured 10K images in the last 6 months so that the number sequence is starting over.</p>

<p>none of my business, of course, but i hope you're not putting all those images into the same folder!<br>

i was recently going through my archives and assembling a retrospective of some of this year's photos. occasionally, the system would warn me that i was about to overwrite an image of the same name -- since the camera is now reusing those filenames for the 5th or 6th time...</p>

<p>What's wrong with putting them in the same folder? Most of us use a workflow application to sort/organize our photographs. Nobody actually opens Finder or Explorer to open their images, do they?</p>

<p>The risk for putting so many files in the same folder is that each (image) file must have a unique name, while the file names straight from the camera have only 10K unique ones. So unless you have an excellent discipline to rename all image files to unique file names, there is some risk that a new file may displace an old one with the same name. In other words, there is some risk of losing images. I am sure this kind of risk is all preventable and mose likely you can use some software to make it easy; you simply need to be careful with your workflow.</p>
