Canon 50D

I shoot with film bodies, but a friend of mine recently purchased the 50D and it was returned to Canon for repair after owning it for only 2 months. He says that the 50D was powering off, while shooting and he had to turn the switch physically off and then on- repeatedly, to get the camera working again. I've heard of this happening with the 40d but didn't know it was a problem with the 50D. Has anyone else heard of this? He bought the camera new and it's under warranty, but still, an annoyance for something that costs nearly $1,200.00.

I agree, it is an annoyance. But beyond that, it seems it's just an unfortunate and isolated defect; the bad luck of the draw. The good part is Canon stands behind their products, and repairs are usually quick and good. And I'll cast my vote as having heard nothing of this type of failure with either the 40D or 50D.

Trying to generalize this to price paid makes little sense. Even the highest cost automobiles, boats, planes, etc. can have similar isolated defects. Shall we condemn the lot because one fails? I think not.

Don't be a jerk, Finley.

The OP's question was about a camera repeatedly turning off - nothing to do with AF issues - and we're right to point out that whatever the problem is, it's rarer than rocking-horse manure.

Whining about your - entirely unrelated - problems is tedious and unhelpful, and despite what you seem to be saying (and it's far from clear - your bitching seems to be getting in the way of clarity) most Canon users speaking as they find, have no problem with the brand or with the support behind it.

Might I suggest that DPR would be a better place for your "observations"?

Yes, the camera body was apparently returned to Canon repair in Irvine California. He told me recently that it takes approximately 10 business days. They had evaluated the camera upon his description of the problem and said it would be fixed and returned to him.

I've owned a 40D for 2 years and a 50D for 11 months and have no problems whatsoever. Never heard of the 50D suddenly powering off, so it isn't a common problem. Before sending in for repair, I'd always try a PRAM flush first (remove backup and main batteries).

Sometimes the light’s all shining on me. Other times I can barely see.

IF THEY STILL WANT CANON THEN BEST OF LUCK. I,m sure they build a good one every now and then.

Statistically speaking, probably just about as many as Nikon or other major camera manufacturers.

Mr Engle is a troll that has made at least 14 posts bashing canon. I suspect that he is actually Mr William Asprey who has bashed canon so much under that name he had to find a new one. I have never seen anyone go to the lenghts that this person has to brand bash. You would almost think that he worked for Nikon but Nikon is a reputable company and it would be hard to believe they would hire a person of his caliber. The 50d is a great camera by the way and I have owned 6 canon slrs over the past 35 years and havent had to repair one of them. So you keep on bashing Mr Engle at least it is amusing try another name that one is worn out now.

My friend just now told me there was an error 30 message, when he originally had the problem(before mailing the camera to Canon repair). He now says that Canon had told him it was a shutter issue which is why he had to power down and then power up the camera.
