Need help with crooked JPGs, please!

Recommended Posts

Lately a lot of my older pix are "split" somewhere along the horizontal plane like in this picture here.
http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a260/Hans_Breuer/CollaredReedSnakeCalamariapavimenta.jpg
I think my HDD is going south, could that be the reason? I use a Pentax K10D to shoot RAW, then convert to JPG with Bibble Lite, and view in ACDSee. No other image editing software involved.

Anybody know of a program that can fix image corruptions of this sort?

Thanks very much in advance!

Hans

Hans, when you say 'a lot' of the pics, is this a large percentage? Are the RAW originals still showing up alright or are they showing this split?
I see not only a physical offset (easy fix in Photoshop to snag and move into alignment) but also a color tone difference. If the coloration problem happens in everyimage, then you've got some adjusting to do to get the images colors aligned too.
I would doublecheck the RAW files to make certain it's not a sensor problem first.

If I see that right it looks like a corrupted bit in the compressed file, so that the uncompression of the jpeg from this bit on is shifted in colour and "phase" (the image left border is actually the opixels from the original right side).

Hi Thomas & Thomas (what are the odds of that? :-) ),
thank you very much for your quick answers!
"A lot" means about 2-3%, as far as I can see it from here. All these pix were OK when I processed them back when, but now show up this way since I did a Windows reinstall last week.
The pix were not backed up from another source, but are still situated on their original HDD partition I've reserved for the "My Documents" folder (I wiped and reinstalled only the system partition), which is why I suspect the HDD might be getting old (As they say, there are only two kinds of hard drives: dead and dying)
I don't use Photoshop, but PhotoImpact, which I use very little as I do most everything directly in Bibble. What functions would I have to use?
Thanks again!

In digging through some of my old files, I discovered three or four in similar condition!
And I know my drive is healthy and not having any issues.
To do the correction, you'll need to isolate (select) one of the halves, change its position, and then adjust its color. I would likely make the color change (very delicately though!) in LAB color, because the shift seems isolated to the Red-Green continuum, which is highly suited to LAB.

Hi everyone

sorry for the belated reply. Thanks very much for your thoughts and ideas! New photos keep getting corrupted, so I'll also try to change my RAM, which was the source for much trouble in the past.
Cheers, and have a nice weekend!
