Refurbished XTi

Hey all! I've used manual SLRs for the past 20 years and now I'm looking at

buying my first DSLR and have been investigating the Canon XTi. I'm on a tight

budget and honestly thought I wouldn't be able to afford it but have found a

vendor on eBay which has them refurbished. I get the impression from the forum

here that you guys have no problem with refurbs, but I'm wondering about the

vendor. The link is here.

(this auction is closed but they have others still open). The vendor is 'Global

Phoenix Direct'.

Any thoughts on this? The description claims 'Canon Refurbished "A CLASS" to

BRAND NEW Condition'.

Thanks!

Actually this vendor has received considerably more negative feedback than 701. Note the number of "mutually withdrawn" ratings at this link. These were initially NEGS. This seller also apparently practices tit-for-tat feedback. If a buyer posts negative feedback, they often neg the buyer in return - which explains the large number of "mutually" withdrawn feedbacks.

Not a seller I would be comfortable dealing with, and I have dealt with hundreds of sellers on eBay.

Yes, B&H is bhphotovideo.com. I have not dealt with any "stores", per se, on eBay -- just individuals (with respect to photo equipment). As long as you are familiar with their return policies, and are comfortable with them, I would have no problems getting used or refurbished equipment from B&H, Adorama, etc. Likewise, as long as you get plenty of detailed photos and talk with the seller (that has substantial positive feedback, but nowhere near as much shady feedback as the seller you posted about), I would also feel comfortable buying used off of eBay. You might also check out Craig's List. Good way to connect with other local people. Not only do you save on shipping, but you get to check out the stuff in person!

Take a lot at Cameta Camera (cametaauctions) out of Amityville, NY and see if they have what you want. They often sell factory refurbs (listed as demos) in addition to brand new gear, and usually extend the the 90 day manufacturers warranty coverage to a year via a store warranty. No demo XTi's listed right now, but they do have a demo XT listed.

Brian, I just bought one for ebestdeal4u or GPD. My camera may be a refurb but its brand new. It had the new plastic smell and all. Looked like it had never been touched and works flawless. Go for it and save money. They have fast shipping and good communication.

Chris - Thanks for the input but I decided to go with the advice above and deal with a more reputable company. So, I ended up going with Cameta and getting a "demo" Nikon D80 from them(sorry Canon people). It's not here yet but I'm looking forward to playing with it.

I believe I am going to buy an XSI from them, you talk about their negatives but come on I see 13 negatives in the last month out of 6800 purchases. That is pretty good. I can get a refurbished xsi with extras for cheaper than a new XS. Oh wait this post is old...

Two comments:
1. Re: Global Phoenix. . .I have bought several cordless phone setups from GlobalPhoenix and am quite satisfied with price & quality. And, on that basis, I probably buying a Canon P&S for my wife from them.
2 Re: Cameta Camera. . .I've been buying from Cameta for several years (most recently a Nikon D70s & a D90). . .And, I am happy to give a "Super" rating for quality, Service, and Speed.
3. Re: KEH. . .Also bought from them over the years (Nikon F4S and several lenses & 35mm accessories). . .Again, a super rating! Especially, with respect to service and KNOWLEDGE! [i bought the Nikon digitals from Cameta because PRICE of the Refurbished (ACTUALLY a NEW camera as someone above mentioned) which KEH could not touch. . .Plus Cameta offers lots of USEFUL GOODIES with their camera "packages"]
