I am not on the digital world yet. I have two bodies(FM2 and FM3, ) and 3 lenses. two of them manual Nikkor 85 1:2, Nikkor 24 1:2.8 and a AF Nikkor 50 1:1.8.
Although I am very hapy with my cameras and lenses, I am thinking on buying a digital camera, but I would like to use my old lenses.
I've been told that I can use the manual lenses ( 85 and 24) on a D300, but not on a D90
Is that true? Can the D300 be used with manual focus?
What camera would you recommend me?

thank you in advance for your help

Any Nikkor lens Ai or one that has been Ai`ed or later will work in manual or A mode on the D300
The 50 1.8 AF will work in MAS or P mode on a D300 and auto focus.
All Nikkor 85 2.0 are Ai, so M and A mode will work

Different version s of the 24 2.8 were made. If it has a rubber focus grip, then it will work on M or A
If it has been Ai`ed it will also work the same. If it has a step in the skirt of the focus mount end "overhang" around F11, it is Ai or has been converted.

The 85 and 24 will work as manual lenses without metering on a D90. The 50 will meter. Not sure if it will auto focus. Definately will manual focus.

The answer to your question is YES. You certainly can use most old and/or manual focus lenses on the D300.

The D300 has a very loyal following of photographers. It is heavy as a brick (especially with the second battery mounted on it) but is an absoltely wonderful camera.

You cannot mount pre-AI lenses without AI modification onto the FM2 and FM3a. Therefore, the OP's lenses must be AI or later, including AI-S for manual focus.

Therefore, all of them will meter with the D300, but the D90 will not meter with the manual-focus ones (since neither one is a P lens). The D90 has a built-in AF motor so that it can auto focus with any Nikon 50mm/f1.8 AF lens.

If you can afford a D300, I would certainly get that over the D90. IMO there is no point to consider any discontinued Nikon DSLR as they are all considerably inferior to the D300.

The only caveat is that the D300 itself will like be replaced in the next few months. If you are not in a hurry, I would wait another month or two and see whether any successor to the D300 is announced. Any successor may or may not be "better" than the D300 itself, but prices for the old model will likely go down.
