bsd230
Glenn that is a great idea. I have always wanted to do that with an old DSLR.
eric friedemann
Since we've struck on the subject of infrared, is there any benefit to shooting an IR-converted DSLR, as opposed to simply using the IR/black and white conversion feature in Photoshop CS4?

glenn_robelen
Where in CS4 is the IR filter? Is it pulling the information when you open a camera raw image in Photoshop?
eric friedemann
Its in Image > Adjustments > Black & White. Whether the IR conversion is available ACR is a good question, I'll have to look for that.

ssnkssnk_ssnk
D700 has set a standard for Digital SLR for me. I wouldn't want anything less.....and nothing more. :)
If you can afford, then why not buy one today. Let not anyone ask you about your motives behind your purchase. You have 100% right to be happy. ;)
bsd230
I agree with ssnk, the only person you have to justify your purchase to is yourself and maybe your wife. I also agree that it has set a standard that all cameras in this category will be judged. The only feature it could have that it doesn't would be a live histogram, that would be a handy. I really have to nit pick to find something to complain about with this camera. I won't be buying a new camera for a long, long time.
erickdanzer
I agree with all the very favorable reviews of the D700 here. It's a great camera, and I love shooting with it. I suppose it all comes down to whether the price is worth it? In my mind, you could ask the same question about the D700 vs the D3. I like the D3 better, but is it worth the extra price? That's such a personal question. In my view, if you make money from photography and do any critical shooting in low light conditions the shift to a full frame sensor is entirely worth the price - it's pretty much a non-question for me. If you don't make money from your photography, or don't do much shooting in low light, then I'm not sure it is.
BTW, Peter Burian has a good discussion of the D700 on Photocrati here:
Nikon D700 Field Test Report
And assuming that a large part of the reason you're making the upgrade it to move in to full-frame territory, Burian also has a good discussion of full-frame issues in a number of articles.
Are Full Frame Sensor Cameras the Best Bet for a Serious Amateur
Large vs Small Sensors: Pros and Cons
