chuck_wullenjohn
In looking at various 90mm lenses to buy for my new (for me) M6, I am seriously looking at an f/4 Elmar or Rokkor, but am concerned at their 40.5mm filter size. This seems like a pretty unusual size. That means I would have to buy duplicate filters of the 39mm filters I already have or intend to purchase. Correct? From what I read, the 90mm tele-elmarit has 39mm filter threads. If that is correct and it takes the same size filters, that might be the way to go. Any thoughts?
Chuck
tobey_bilek
Thin tele elmarits are plagued with lens separation in rear elements. No economical repair.
Mine is fine since new in 1985, but many have had problems.

90 4.0 Macro Elmar is current collapsible and a first class lens in all respects. I would not give min up.
90 3.5 Cosina Voitlander APO. First rate lens. CameraQuest.com
JDMvW
Places like CameraFilters and others offer a lot of 40.5mm screw-in filters. It's an older size, but they are small and not usually too expensive.
john_shriver
40.5mm filters aren't that hard to find at all, including new. The oddball size is 40mm, used almost exclusively by Canon on their RF lenses.
joel_matherson
A someone has already mention 40.5mm filters are readily available but I can certainly appreciate the desire to standardize with 39mm. The 2 Rokkor 90's take 40.5 but the Elmar-C takes the even more oddball series 5.5. However, although not perfect it is 39mm with a different pitch. This means that a 39mm filter can screw in a couple of threads and hold the filter quite firm. If you dont force it on hard its a method that I have often used in this instance.
knut_schwinzer
What about an Elmar or Elmarit 90mm (my recommendation) early version?! You could buy them for a song and they both have 39mm filter thread.
Great for portraits, both!

fred_c1

Thin tele elmarits are plagued with lens separation in rear elements.

There are no cemented optical groups in the thin T-E to separate.

At this focal length, f/4 or even f/3.5 is too slow for me personally. (Remember you need higher shutter speeds than you can get away with shorter lenses.) If you're sure you don't need more lens
speed, just get a 40.5 to 43 or 49mm step-up ring.
