Side by side, Nikon D5000 and D90, quick comparison

I did a very quick comparison of the Nikon D5000 and Nikon D90. If you are wondering how they compare in weight and size, buffer, shutter sound, LCD quality and how they actually look sitting side by side, check it out. Hopefully this clip will provide some useful information to those who cannot make it to the local camera store and handle both cameras.

Thanks for looking. All questions and comments welcome.

Forgot to mention the memory cards used in both cameras are Class 6 SDHC.

Cheers,

Nice video. I think you did a good job of highlighting the significant differences. I picked up a D5000 a couple of days ago. Upgrading from a D70, needless to say, I'm loving it. Do you think the D90 has a better build quality? A couple of early reviews have made that claim, but I didn't notice any difference in the store, nor do I notice any difference between the D5000 and my D70.

Speaking of video, I just made a couple with the D5000 and I think maybe the video capabilities for it and the D90 are underrated by a lot of people. It's true you can't autofocus while recording, but if you're outdoors you can stop down quite a bit and really not need to autofocus for a lot of stuff.

Ron, I totally agree. The larger sensor gives great DOF control, the video dudes use a 35mm adapter on their pro video cameras and have to disable AF and do MF to get that effect. Not sure if you are referring to that, but what I meant was that my little video clip about the D90 and D5000 could be a lot better.

Very good work with the comparison video, Mike.

BTW, you're doing some great stuff with the melding of still/video. I really enjoyed the "L Train", "Breathless" and "Understand" videos. I had a feeling months ago that the D90 could revolutionize the way some photographers incorporate both aspects of the medium. The D90 and D5000 seem ideal for electronic journalism and bloggers who want to incorporate short videos into their work, without having to tote another camera.

Do any of you have a recommendation re: WHICH cards are "best" for the D90? I have been shooting a D70s with CF cards and had excellent results with Kingston cards. However, the SDHC card is something new for me and I have no idea which are the most dependable. I know that a larger capacity card is recommended for the D90 (I am going with 8 GB at least. Whereas 2 GB was MORE than adequate for the D70)
Thanks

Brian, the conventional wisdom regarding media cards has been that the camera buffer and internal processor were more important than the media card when it comes to handling high framerates. However I don't know whether this remains true for use of the video features in the D90 and D5000. So far I haven't seen any specific reference to this in reviews of these cameras, perhaps because the testers weren't thinking in terms of the video applications.
