will_fagundes
Hello everyone!

i was able to get credentials to shoot an indy / camping world truck series race coming up at Texas in June. The races will be in the late afternoon, going into the evening and i have a quick doubt: Which one of these 3 lens should i use?
AF VR Zoom-NIKKOR 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6D ED Lens
AF Zoom-NIKKOR 80-200mm f/2.8D ED Lens
70-200 mm f/2.8G IF-ED AF-S VR Zoom Nikkor Lens

Im able to order the 80-400 and have it here pretty quick but the other two are out of stock on my online retailer (available credit account) and they won't be here in time.. so i would have to rent either one of the two...
Should i go ahead and buy the 400 with not such great apperture or should i go ahead and rent either one of the two options left?

thanks,

will fagundes

PS: i will be using a d300 with a 17-55 2.8 primarilly and a d80 with the long lens and then swap them when the race starts.

shoppix
Get the 70-200 2.8.The days are long down there and at that time of year, but you'll be better off with the 2.8. Buy from another online retailer if your regular guy has none.. There are several good ones. I use the Sigma version but someday will sell it and get the Nikon one. then again, the Sigma is pretty damn good.
sounds like good time and place to be shootin' at.
Steve
nathan_meador
Definitely the 70-200 2.8, you'll need all the speed you can get out of the lens to photograph the cars during the race.
John Crowe
I'd want a 300/2.8 on the crop body. Even with a pass I think you will find 200mm too short. Rent the 80-200/2.8 and 300/2.8.
elliot1
Sounds exciting! I was fortunate to be able to get credentials and shoot at Daytona International Speedway a week before the Daytona 500. It was quite an experience!

Any lenses slower than f2.8 will be almost useless as the sun goes down unless you shoot at slower shutter speeds and pan (which can make for some pretty interesting shots). From the lenses you list, the 70-200 mm f/2.8G IF-ED AF-S VR Zoom Nikkor Lens is the obvious choice.

Possibly as or even more important than your lenses and camera will be your shooting location - get a good spot!
