sfcole
Hi,
The Vivitar 283 has 4 colors corresponding to different f-stop/distances. However, there's nothing for the 20ft/F8. So how do you set the dial for auto exposure?
thanks
sauerwine
Based on what you're telling me, you have the dial adjusted right now to 200 or 160 ISO.
There is no "auto" setting for this 20' mark. You either have to:
A. Actually BE 20 feet away, and turn the dial to "M"
B. Choose the 30' / 5.6 setting, turning the dial to Orange
C. Choose the 15' / 8.0 setting, turning the dial to Blue.

If you absolutely need f8 choose or set your ISO higher or lower than 200/160. Choosing 400 yields the Orange setting at up to 30'. at f8.
sauerwine
Another alternative (I THINK) could be to:
Acquire a flexible Neutral Density filter of +1 stop.
Cut a small section from the filter about the same size as the front 283 sensor.
Turn the 283's sensor to Blue.
Tape the filter over the sensor.
Shoot at F8 at 200 ISO.

The neutral density filter will "stop down" the sensor by one "film speed" allowing automatic operation on Blue at F8 for up to 20 feet.
