sam_ellis
I got a call tonight asking me to shoot a surprise 80th birthday party. What is the common approach for this type of job? Hourly rate? My "extra time" rate for weddings is $150/hour, do I go with that? Do I include a set of 4x6s? I would definitely offer prints to the guests from my website, so there is extra revenue there. Do I offer to print on site with my little HP 5x7 printer? It would be a four hour party with a band at a restaurant. I doubt I would stay the whole time, maybe three hours tops. I've never done a birthday party before. I searched the forum, but got a thousand hits and didn't see anything pertinent. Thanks,Sam
ksimephoto
Sam-- I took a look at your website, but no prices listed. Just charge what you would for a photo session. I can't imagine a birthday party lasting more than one or two hours...
sam_ellis
I'm in the middle of a redesign, and left the prices off by accident. I should have it completed by the end of the weekend. I was thinking my hourly rate of $150/hour. Thanks for the input. I was afraid nobody was going to reply!
michelle a.
I'm doing a Christening in February. I'll be charging my hourly rate and giving them a set of 4x6's.
royaleimagerybycathy
Hi Sam - I would suggest printing on site if you can swing it; I've shot a couple of birthday parties and charged my regular rate $175/hr. Party people usually want to take the pictures with them when they leave. Generally, I'll give an hour or so at n/c, so I don't offer free prints. Most parties have lasted 3-4 hours if in a banquet hall and there will be highlights to cover, speakers etc., there will also be fun shots to capture as the guests are dancing (especially if they are a lil tipsy :) Cathy
daasebrephotos
Cathy, I do agree with you about the time. I do cover a group of minorities on their wedding and birthday parties, and such parties could last as long as 5 hours. I am about to cover one in NJ; the program starts at 10p and ends at 5a!
Interestingly, almost everybody wants to be in the pictures. It is always chaos and fun!
