Canon 40D vs Canon 50D for Sports Photography

I currently shoot sports with a Canon XTI (400D) and would like to move up to a better performing camera. I have tried to search and read articles but was wondering if anyone out there "who shoots sports" has an opinion on whether I should spend the extra $500 for a Canon 50D or the 40D performs well and it isn't worth spending the extra $$$'s. My main lenses are the canon 85 1.8 and the Sigma 70-200 2.8. Thanks..

Jeff, I would recommend you a 40D. I read a lot of reviews about 50D and to be honest IMHO its not a good moment to move to 50D. I preffer to wait a little bit more until move to 50D.
You can research photo.net regarding 50D and take your own opnion.
For photo sports 40D is a good entry point, if you have some money and can spend (or in a moment waste it, depeding what you will do) I recommend you a MARK II because it performs 8/9 fps.
What you will do ? surf photos ? underwater photos ?
Best Regards,

IMHO the 40D is a real value-leader for action photography. 10 Mpix is good-enough, the frame-rate is OK (~6 fps), the AF is pretty good, and the buffer is very good (17 raw frames). Unless you have some lust for the extra resolution of the 50D, I'd highly recommend the 40D.

At the moment, the money difference between a new 40D along with the extra battery and battery grip vs a used 1D Mark II with build-in battery grip, better AF, faster frame rate and professional body is really nothing, therefore I would recommend a used 1D mark II instead of buying a 40D or 50D. Just, be sure to check the camera condition very well, such as how many actuations in the shutter, dead pixels, etc...
Currently, you could purchase a used 1D Mark II for $1,000 US Dollars!
You're welcome to see some images that I have taken with both cameras on my photo stream.
I have both cameras and for sports photography my first choice is a 1D Mark II
Good luck in your decision...
