kelvin_kay
I'm using the 580EX with a 40D. Just wondering what mode (A/P/M) people are using the most for these following situations:
1. shooting outside, flash is for fill
2. indoors when flash is main source of lighting
3. indoors using bounce flash
More specifically, what are the advantages of using (M)anual mode over sticking with P mode which is what I usually use.
Thanks.
Ken Katz
1. Av or P
2. M
3. M
I use manual for indoor flash so I can control the aperture and shutter speed (set the aperture to control DOF and shutter speed to control the ambient exposure mix)
cabbiinc
1. Av
2. M
3. M

The advantages of using M indoors is that you basically have control over what you meter for. For example, if you have someone walking in a door and it's bright outside and the camera doesn't meter for the light from outside then your going to have that light be blown out from behind him; or you might want the light blown out behind him making it look angelic but the camera sees the light and meters for that.

In a nutshell you have more control.
shambrick007
1-Av, 2-M, 3-M. M gives me control of the DOF.
allardk
Same for me. 1Av,2M,3M. M gives you full control over blur and DOF, and ETTL (with FEC if needed) gives you automatic exposure. What more do you want?
I don't ever use P because the camera cannot read my mind and I'm too lazy to find out how to read the camera's mind.
