charles_lipton
The wife and I will be taking a Southern/Eastern Carribbean cruise the end of October beginning of November. I am shooting with a 5D and have the 24-105mm and a 135mm f/2L; my ony two lenses. What is recommended for such a cruise? We will be doing land excursions probably on our own taking taxi's etc in ports. Our port of debarkation /embarkation is San Juan,PR, where we'll fy in to a day or two ahead.
Thanks....
John Crowe
If those are the lenses you enjoy using and have not missed anything then they will likely do just fine for you, and they do cover a reasonable range. My own preference would be for a 17-40/4 L or used 17-35/2.8 L, and a 200/2.8 L or 300/4 L to go beyond your superb 135/2 L.
alan_cox3
I rented a 5D2 for Hawaii last month. I got the 17-40 for the trip and it turned out to be the lens that I kept on the 5D2 most of the time. It should match at least the 24-105 in sharpness (and of course nothing matches the 135). Have a great trip.

mark_pierlot
If I were you, Charles, I'd add a 17-40/4 L and a 70-200/4 IS L to your kit. They would augment your existing lenses perfectly, and are both light and compact, and fast enough for your stated purposes.
charles_lipton
So.. what most of you are saying is that my 24-105mm won't be wide enough for most of my photographic needs?
mark_pierlot
Charles, nobody except you knows precisely what your photographic needs are. If you were to take only one lens, the 24-105 would probably be your best choice. But, since you want to take additional lenses, it only makes sense to go wider and longer. I could have advised you to pick up a 24-70/2.8 L, which many consider to be the best mid-range zoom made, but there are several reasons why you likely don't need that particular lens for your trip: it's big and heavy, it's expensive, it's unnecessarily fast for your stated uses, and you've got its focal length range covered already. The 17-40, on the other hand, is a great lens for shooting landscapes, and, since it reaches ultra-wide, it wouldn't be redundant in your kit. Then again, only you know whether you need to go that wide. In the Caribbean, I definitely would.
yakim_peled1

As light levels might be low in November I'd consider the 16-35/2.8 II instead of the 17-40. Another thing is a good and light tripod and head. I have the 1541T and BH25. Excellent setup IMHO and steady even with my 70-200/2.8 IS so your lenses will pose no trouble. Add a good bag (I have the CompuDayPack) and you are all set.

Happy shooting,
Yakim.

charles_lipton
It appears from those of you who have responded that w/a and not telephoto is the way to go in the Caribbean?

charles_lipton
Thanks Yakim..... So looks like I'll be in the market for a 17-40mm; I can't afford the 16-35. I believe it will be a compliment to the 24-105mm....

yakim_peled1

It will do so very nicely. Have fun.

Happy shooting,
Yakim.
