John, I did get lucky! A client of mine sponsored one of the cars and needed some promotional pictures taken of it. After taking the shots I needed, I had full access to the pits and grid prior to the start of the afternoon race. Some of the most interesting shots I took were non-racing shots - there is a lot going on behind the scenes in the pit and grid area prior to the start of a race. While we had great seats to watch the race behind the pits near the start/finish line, all the action (many accidents fortunately without serious injury) took place around turn 3 (which is where many photographers seemed to hang out). Needless to say, my racing shots were kind of boring. Between the two races, we got to go in the infield, enjoy the concert and fireworks and go right on the track - my 7 year old signed his name on the checkered start/finish line. It was a truly exciting event to say the least!

FWIW and to my surprise, Canon cameras were in abundance everywhere and there were many BIG, BIG lenses around. I shot with my 5D using my lowly 100-400mm which was dwarfed by much of the pro gear I saw.

Its back to reality now.
