vincent_ng1
Hi, I just bought a Nikon D90 camera. While I'm enjoying the Nikkor 50mm f1.8 and Nikkor 70-200mm F2.8 (Xmas gift from my boss!), I want to get a f2.8 standard-zoom, around 24-70 to 24-85mm. My budget is around C$500-600, or U$450-550.
I'm considering between Sigma and Tamron, but also welcome other suggestions.
Thanks.
Vince
hans_janssen
Tamron 17/50 2.8 feels like a toy, but good glass.
harvey_edelstein1
I have the 24-85mm f/2.8-4.0 its a FF lens if you are using a DX lens you might want to get the 16-85mm lens which is much wider on the DX format. I saw it on Pricegrabber.com for mid $500 level. Oh, also the lens has VR that you might find useful. Only if you expect to go FF would the big FF lens be a good move for you.
ray_du_bois
For the money you can find a 35-70 selling cheap, it has a push pull zoom and it's a very sharp lens.
jannekaakinen
I'd say go with Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8. I have one and it is by far my most used lens (on D80). Sharp enough, fine bokeh and while it is a bit plasticy, I've got nothing bad to say about it (other than it could be a bit wider).
ramon_v__california_
28 and 35mm might not be wide enough for you. the sigma 24-60mm f/2.8 is sharper and lighter than its big brother 24-70mm. i have one and i'm happy with it. the tamron 17-50mm is very good also. when i want a light gear, it replaces the nikon 17-55mm, even for serious shoots.
hawkman
for DX 16-85 VR is your choice, a 24-75 will have a FOV of 36-112 which is neither wide nor tele (considering that you have 50mm and 70-200) while 16-85 has a FOV of 24-128 which is great for many things.
wpahnelas
go with the nikkor 24-85/2.8-4. stick with nikon glass, since you're already building a good kit. not saying the bargain brands are bad, but nikkors are an investment. the others, not so much... also, you might get an FX camera sooner than you expect, so it's not a bad idea to start preparing...

paul_b.1
If you want a f2,8 standard zoom for D90, and you have 550$ I think you should indeed considering between Sigma and Tamron 17-50/2,8.
captain_jack
In my own experience with Tamron 28-75 f/2.8. I would rather stick with Nikons. I am currently using Nikon 24085 f/2.8 - 4, and finding it much much better than Tamron 28-75. I agree with one of the other posts on this thread about sticking with Nikon glass.
