joshroot
Twitter is a really hard thing to quantify specifically in terms of "did I get more business from this". I don't think anyone is going to look at you and say "well this guy has a twitter account, I think I will hire him". But then again, that's not really what it is supposed to do.

Twitter is a form of "micro blogging ". Essentially it's a quick way to update your target readers on what is going on in your life. This target might be your friends/family, your staff, or prospective customers. Like all blogging, Twitter tends to humanize you somewhat, which is nice. But you also need to balance that humanization with the fact that most people (especially customers) aren't interested in every little aspect of your life.

It's more useful to think of Twitter as a part of a larger information campaign. For example, photo.net has:

A Twitter account: http://twitter.com/photonet

A Facebook group: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Photonet/58543151943

A blog: http://www.photo.net/news/blog

A newsletter: http://www.photo.net/info/newsletter

And a "help" forum: http://www.photo.net/site-help-forum/

By paying attention these options, photo.net users can keep abreast of what is new with the site and what is coming up on the horizon. They don't have to pay attention to all of the options, but as long as they pay attention to one or two, they won't miss out on anything.
