~K1000 part 3~

So the handoff happened today, and the k1k is now my hands! There was an added bonus with meeting up Jeff since I got play with 50-135, the 16-50 and check his funky flash bracket, the battery grip and a nifty korean wireless shutter release. All fun stuff and first change I get to play with some actual Pentax gear. Jeff was kind enough to let me borrow the 50-135 and his cable release. I am absoluetly amazed at how quiet the DA* lenses are!! I got a chance to play with the 50-135it at our museums today and will write about what I think later on... but its bad news for me that I've gotten a hold of this lens, since there might be some upcoming disargeements with my wife!
Have I mentioned how quiet the lens is??? And I do think its quicker, but that might be since its not hunting as much as my 18-250... Nearly all the shots I took today were wide open because I love being able to get that f-stop at those focal lengths!
I have to share this though: I come home, quite thrilled that I get to play with this lens for the next week and my conversation with my wife goes like this:
me - "so Jeff lent me his super cool lens..."
her - "oh that's nice..."
me - "yea, its the type thats all weathersealed!"
her - "mmm-hm"
me - "and its quite fast too, constant aperture of 2.8"
her - "what does that mean?"
me - "well, its useful for low light, and check out how quiet it is compared to my lens..."
at this point I do some focusing with DA lens, then switch it out and attach the DA* lens and focus...
her - "well that's nice, cause it sure as hell ain't inconspcious."
me - "..."
Anyhoo, someone remind me where Javier's K1K is going from here please, though I will probably send it out after the new year. I'm going to try and take the 2 shots during our new years parade/festivities, and why have the camera in the back of the brown truck during that time anyways?

LOL, Somanna! It was great meeting with you today and I hope that you and the Mrs. can reach a compromise on the LBA...I had a good laugh reading through your story because it sounded so, so familiar! If I had a dollar for every time I had this conversation with my wife, I would already be retired and living in a ski chalet.

Have fun with the K1K. What a great little camera. I had forgotten what it felt like to hold a mechanical beauty made of metal, and now I am going to cruise through KEH to snag my own copy. Also, good luck with the AF360 battery door modification...a small screw drilled at the door corner should do the trick.

Cheers, Jeff

Somanna, are you by any chance wearing a Liverpool jersey? If so, I may love you...

I know what you mean about SDM. When I met up with Sean Leahy he let me use his DA* 18-50mm...not good! Silence really is golden...a golden ring around the front of the lens!

As for who gets the lens next, I think Javier is working on getting a list compiled.

Miserere, Same thing here. I had a day with the DA*50-135mm as well and it took awhile to realize the lens was working. So used to the noise of the older AF screw. My 28-105mm Pentax could wake the dead. SDM is really nice just out of budget range!

I'm just wondering if we should post all the exploits of this camera and it's travels to one thread (maybe part 2?) or we'll have 18 threads going around the K1000 travels.

Jeff, I am wondering how many folks are planning on picking up a K1OOO once they use the little fellow. LOL

Somanna, I believe it should go to NY to either Justin or Andrew, then
into Boston. The monkey wrench here is that Mis will be out of town 1st week Of
Jan I believe...Should it go out to to Matt and Maria in Kansas before NY and
Boston?

Javier, Somanna said he would mail it after the new year, so I think it's fine for it to go to NY, then to Boston. I'm sure I'll be back by the time Andrew or Justin send it out.

Somanna, I haven't followed the Premier League in a long time. When I supported Liverpool, Bruce Grobbelaar was their goalkeeper. That should give you an idea of how long ago it was! :-D

1. RE: LBA. having to have conversations such as the above w/ the wives are probably a good thing. Matt read the thread (or I mentioned it to him, I forget already) and he says... "It's nice to share my LBA with someone." "you mean me and the 50-135 (DA*)?" "yeah" "shut up"

I was just whining about wanting the 50 - 135 yesterday (wedding) and how I have the 16 - 50 pretty much at 50 and never widen up, and I'm sitting 3 pews back from the b&g. Grrrrrrr. You guys who must spend much time convincing the wives to let you spend much $$ don't realize what a life saving gift you have going there...... Matt & I share the love of way way way too many toys.

2. In the Pt 2 thread, a book was mentioned. I'm volunteering to build it & print by orders.... If Javi will send me a CD of scans, I can put em in Aperture, arrange pages, and send it off for printing fairly easily.... I think it's a great idea!!

weird, my manual lens is not quiet... there is usually some curse words after "focusing" and pressing the shutter... user error?

Yeah, I hear you on that...but AF didn't fix that, it just makes us convinced it's the camera or the lens now! (and I'm not saying some cameras aren't out of calibration...I just think MOST are user error like testing lens sharpness, hand held wide open!!!)
