I am planning on purchasing a Canon 40D body only. I have a Canon lens on my canon slr film camera, would this lens be compatible with the 40D to get me bye until, I am able to afford new lenses for the 40D? Any information would greatly be appreciated very much.

As the above poster said, if your Canon camera is EOS mount, Yes - If the camera is the older style "Breech Lock" FD mount - No. The easiest way to tell is if the lens does not have a F:stop ring it will work, if the lens does have a F:stop ring it will not work.
Remember also that the 40D is a APS-C cropped sensor camera and not full frame, so your 50mm lens will have the viewing angle of a 80mm (good for portraits), but a 28mm lens would have the viewing angle of a 45mm lens (bad for wide angle!).

Chad, if your film camera/lens is not EOS then I suggest, if it will fit your needs of course, purchase the 40D kit that has the 28-135mm IS lens with it. The lens usually runs +/-$400 but with the kit it only adds +/-$200... I didn't really need the lens but at that price I bought the kit and am pleased that I did as it is a good lens.
Have a good one. JoeR
