Mehmet? ? ?

Where are you?

Where did you see these "rumors".

I have a 40D I use for grip and grin work and it snaps into focus faster than my 20D did especially in low light.

I haven't heard anything and I researched pretty extensively before I decided what I wanted to replace my venerable 20D

since the shutter is approaching it's lifespan.

Please elaborate, I for one am interested.

Dear Bruce, first of all I want to thank all of you for the comments.I have heard about these problems by way of internet media and some Turkish Photograph sharing sites.I investigated this subject in the internet media and I believed that this was not and individual problem.

As Gary says, some 40Ds had real AF problems - it happens.

The other driver for this as an "issue" was comparison with the Nikon D300 - and more to the point, it's 51 AF

points - which had many people mewling about this somehow being evidence of inherently poor AF in the 40D.

For the record: my 40D's AF is *extremely* fast, and *extremely* accurate - in any mode/AF point combination - as

long as *I* don't muck things up.

"I have also heard rumors in forums on the web, thats why i been thinking in buying a 50d instead."

Same AF unit as in the 40D - and the 40D is *too fast and too sensitive* for some people, in that it will acquire focus and lose it again in an instant if "distracted" by say, a busy background.

The 50D will be exactly as capricious - but with as long as the photographer does his bit and puts/keeps the AF o[pint where it needs to be, it stops being a problem and starts being a real advantage.

For the money and pairing with a good lens the 40D AI Servo AF is really good. Of course it can't be compared with the 1D series cameras because those are in different class and cost significantly more. The Nikon D300 has superior AF tracking comparing to the 40D, but that doesn't mean the 40D AF tracking has problem. For 1-shot AF the 40D is excellent.

I've had my 40D for over a year now. It's my first digital SLR and my first time doing action photography. I used to do all B&W, mostly medium format. I photograph sporting dogs and I love using selective focus, only very often the place focused isn't what I wanted, which is usually the eyes of the dog. I kept thinking I would get better and I have, but I'm still frustrated at my results. I have finally determined that I think I don't fully understand how the 40D locks in focus, so I'm reading as much as I can right now trying to get a good grasp on that.
Keith, do you have any suggestions for keeping that AF point where it needs to be when doing action shots using continuous exposure and AF Servo? I do understand how to set AF points, but not sure if this is feasible for action shots or how that works under AF Servo.
Little note, I discovered from another post that I could review where my camera was focusing (after download) by viewing in the Canon image browser and turning on "Show AF Frame" (or points) That was interesting to look at, sometimes, even with a dog standing still the AF point wasn't even on the dog!
After reading some things, could it also be that this isn't the ideal camera for this usage? Thanks for any input.
