Can't get to workpace because of Adorama animation

It's a problem with the overall width of your web browser. If your screen resolution prevents you from widening your browser (which makes the problem go away), use the newly added "My Workspace" link that you'll see at the very BOTTOM of every page, among the other little text links.

This problem has been noted by others, but appears to be limited to certain browsers, especially Firefox 3.x and later version of IE. I'm having no problems at all with Firefox 2.x and IE 6. Admin and programmers are aware of the problem and are working to resolve it.

Another factor appears to be monitor display resolution. Some photo.netters have observed problems with screen resolutions less than 1000 pixels wide. Again, no problems on my system, an old PIII with WinME and typical 768x1024 CRT resolution.

Optional ways to access the "My Workspace" and Sign In/Out" have been added to the bottom of every photo.net page and have long been accessible via other methods. (I typically use auto-login software, so my sign-in is via a toolbar utility.) And, as Matt points out, the Sharing tab offers an optional additional way to access the My Workspace page.

The site needs ads to thrive. All large web communities do - someone, somewhere, must pay for server space and maintenance. As a volunteer moderator I don't receive any direct remuneration. But as a longtime photo.net site member, I have enjoyed the benefits of site-wide improvements as a result of successful marketing and advertising. So have we all. Photo.net's ads are by far the least intrusive of any such similar hobbyist and professional site I visit. (Wanna see some intrusive ads? Visit the qrz.com site for ham radio enthusiasts, or most social networking sites like myspace.)

I did a quick experiment, moving the browser page from my 19" monitor to my 15" monitor, where the peeler corner does curl over into the workspace box. I also get the same effect if I reduce the page size on the 19" monitor. So, Matt is right about the problem being overall page width, but that's going to be limited by the width of your monitor, too. A workaround: Zoom the page until the peeler corner goes off screen. It's not pretty, but it does make cursor handling up there a little easier.

Then, go buy a bigger monitor :-)

I also find this extremely irritating. I don't want to get to get to the Adorama pages. This tricking just makes me angry both to PN and Adorama. It's extremely tasteless, lacks all the style, is an idea invented by non less than a complete idiot! I've paid my subsrctiption and I shouldn't ahve to waste my time on the Adultrama or what ever!

After I posted, I discovered that if I changed the width of the browser page, I could get to the workspace, but, you know, I kind of like to have the width of my browser page on my laptop set by <i>me</i> rather than by an ad.

<p>

I like Adorama as a company, and I am glad they are sponsoring the site, but it surely can't be in their favor to use a form of display that annoys the user of the site. Maybe if this has to be there, put it in the upper left or someplace else. Or move the links at the upper left so there's no conflict.

Josh, and I will reiterate what _I_ implied already, that this is not a solution to an annoying problem, it is a "workaround". It doesn't come up because of the width of the screen on my desktop, but it is difficult to avoid on my smaller laptop screen. I can figure out how to get there by one way or another, but it would be better to solve the actual problem. I am glad that the programmers are working on it as Lex said.

JDM:

I don't see that as a workaround at all. Just another way to get it. Kind of like having a front entrance and a back

entrance to your house...

C'mon people the internet advertising is still fairly new. These things don't go from Moronic to the best thing since slides

bread overnight y'know... Let's give another 5 to 10 years I'm sure there will be features and functions that are ok - who knows mayhap pleasing - to most internet usage. I can imagine side of the road billboard wasn't very popular the first ten

years they were getting set up...

Then there's always the old "vote with your feet" which ultimately would photo.net and sites like it to fold. So let's all

suck it up for a few more years and stop being whiners and just go with the flow. Not only will it help Josh with his

twitches, it'll also lower your blood pressure significantly... ; - )

Oh my .... Now (19th Nov) the "sign in" and "my workspace" are situated on the left side. It is now wasting two lines of space at the top of the page. Also the fonts seem to have gone a step smaller and they pattern much much worse.<p>

I think it is sad that people try to make internet pages too complex. Here we have first at top left corner (1) "photo.net" and a few lines downbound (2) "photo.net - community of photographers" ... it's all waste to say the same thing twice. I would skip the 2nd entirely and put all the choices into the same line with forums/equipment .. that is .... / sign in (out) /my wrkspce<p>

99% of all commercial net pages are too complex .. the simpler the better .. net pages should not be done on the conditions given by the graphic designers but users. The graphic designers tend to be just like net-programmers -- all the latest tricks must be there and you can be sure that the latest version of flash or Java are installed only to so many computers .. people really should stick to standard HTML until the new features are bullet proof.<p>

I don't know whether I am a typical user or not but now the Adorama add just backfires. I am sure they don't want negative associations with their brand. Keep it simple!

What are you talking about? The sign in and workspace links are exactly like the always have been for me with firefox 3. What browser are you using? Please upload a screenshot.

<p>

Not everything is intentional, you know. Some things are just glitches.

Yes, I know it can be glitches. I've done net page sources and it can be a mess especially if you deviate from standard HTML. I simply hate the XTML. I also find it frustrating that the old Mozilla (1.x?) was more reliable than this one and I certainly am not going to use any MicroSovjet browser.<p>

The links to sing in and my workspace used to situate on the right hand corner before on my browser.

  • 2 weeks later...

Nobody else is still reporting Juha's issue to me. Which means that either, nobody is reporting it to me and it is still happening (unlikely) or the problem is on his side (likely considering that he has admitted that he is zooming and over-riding the stylesheet).

I'm using the exact same browser and have no problems..
