mario_henriquez
I'm sure there are. And no, this is not a personals ad. I just started thinking that most (all in my case) of the time, on the boards or the pictures I happen to see, the posters/photographers are men. Like I said, in my case, I can't recall clicking on a photo or reading a post by a female member. I'm sure this is just a matter of chance, but it does show that female members are in the minority--the extreme minority! I am taking a beginning photography course and, gladly, the male to female ratio is pretty much 1 to 1. Not so here. Come on ladies, identify yourselves. I would love to see your pictures! chris_waller
I find that on the courses I teach the bias is strongly towards female students.
rffffffff
I think men are more technical and analytical, and therefore more likely to be on the internet talking about the stuff... My wife is more likely to be out shooting than reading about it...
john clark
My wife is the pro photographer in my house. I'm the hobbyist. She is completely non-tech though - just likes a camera that 'fits' her style and doesn't get in the way... very sensible shoes.

ccommins
I agree with Amber, but there are times when I would like to join in the post but it's all men and I feel like I am an intruder.
constance_cook
I'm still here. And a funny trend in my classes, which flies in the face of the university's stats, is the increasingly male-dominated courses. And no longer do the women earn the best grades in my classes because the men are working harder and doing better. This doesn't match ratios of men to women in other classes in the college. I still make many photographs but with a new dean and an almost new university president, change has been head-over-heels. Conni
lindsay_dobson
I don't think women post as much as men. I'm in the UK, in the south of England, and I'd say around 40% of the pros I know are female. I'm talking about the portrait/wedding sector. But I would strongly disagree that women aren't technical - almost all the guys I know fall down on that side of things! (-:

sarah_fox
I think men enjoy *talking* about technical stuff more than women, which is often why they are here. The serious photographers who actually photograph things are probably an equal mix. Aside from eagerness to talk tech, I absolutely disagree with the assertion that men are more technical and analytical than women. There's a strong presumption of technical superiority on the part of many men, and that presumption needs a bit of realignment. Fortunately, either some of this realignment has been taking place over the years, or I'm given a bit more benefit of the doubt as I age. I don't know which. john_lawrence4
I don't think one can (or should) generalize as to whether either gender is more technical than the other. All people are different. For what it's worth, I've met both men and women who are really into the technical side of things and both men and women who are not. chelsea
Well said Sarah. I think also that women are more generally hesitant to participate in internet forums, or perhaps they tend to prefer "real in-life" sharing, at photo clubs, courses, etc. There's plenty of women here, some very knowledgeable, some amateurs like me, we just don't jump up and down and make as much noise as the men. sionnac
I have been more active on the APUG forums since I shoot mostly film. It's not something I feel has that much to do with gender (unless you are a woman feeling like Carol does). I think there are more male posters on photo.net, not sure if that is due to technical topics.
joshroot
Photo.net has always had far more men than women posting. Attribute this to any reason you like, there are many to choose from. However, over the past 3-4 years, the site has seen a significant increase in female users. Overall, I think the number of male/female photographers (defined as people who are seriously interested in photography) is equaling out.
hanna_cowpe
Years ago, there was a member directory, where all the names of the members was listed. That no longer exists, but there is a "who's online" feature which at least gives you names of the women currently active. So you can go to their portfolios from there. Keep checking there at different times of the day and that should cover most of us.
a._j._jacobs
I post randomly all the time. Until your post I never really noticed genders of posters, I just read the posts...lol But it's interesting to look at now that you've brought it up... :)

unangelino
Carol
I am really surprised that you'd be hesitant to post and would feel like any kind of intruder, especially since you're a working professional. This site (like any photo site) needs the contributions of professionals, whatever their sex, to keep things real and to make sure that voices of genuine expertise are heard to balance out all of the beliefs expressed by rank amateurs like myself. I hope you reconsider and decide to post more often.
Cheers.
Paul

think27
There has always been a active male majority here ever since I can remember.. and I've been on this site for many many years.. I will say, however, that the Wedding Forum does have a nice showing of female photographers who are active and quite a few brave newbies chime in with questions and requests for critiques. Mary Doo
Re being "technical": I believe it's about 50-50 - just about as many men as women work in the computer-system- technical areas, if that is any indication. Similar ratio exists in my company's actuarial-statistical department. These people hold advanced degrees in mathematics and statistics. Re Photography: If camera clubs are any indication for serious amateurs, just about as many women as there are men members, Maybe 45-55 or so. Re Forum Posting: Overwhelmingly male. Some good reasons are provided above. One theory: since forum postings are are sorta after-work "recreational activities", most wives and mothers would probably be too busy doing their "second job" of cooking, cleaning, tending to their young, or tending to their forum-posting husbands! (LOL!) A couple in my camera club exemplifies this scenario very well. The wife cooks, washes, cleans; and hubby retreats to his study right after supper to tend to "technical and analytical" matters. :) Mary
mark_chartrand
I can understand why you would like to see more photographs taken by females. The major problem I find is that I can't tell the difference between photographs taken by males and photographs taken by females. Even when I look at nudes I can not tell which sex took the picture. I will try to pay more attention to the sex of the photographer. Up until now I just looked at the quality of the image. What I want to know is how many photographers out there are Wiccan or who are practicing witches. I think the numbers will surprise you. aramat57
I am here. I have been on Photo.net several years and have a portfolio here. I don't post in the forums frequently, but I do browse images and portfolios often and leave some comments. I do notice whether the photographer is male or female, primarily because I usually check their bio page before browsing their work. I don't think there is a difference in M vs F photography, I just like to know who I am looking at and maybe understand a bit more where they are coming from.
