mark_chartrand
This is not a question nor a comment about the operation of the photo.net website. I would like to know how others feel. Maybe I am the only one who would like to hear music in the background of the photographer's slide shows? I mean other than my iPod stuck in my ears. I would also like to have the transitions between slides go with the music, using cuts and/or dissolves. I would like to see the show start from black and fade to black at the end. All of this done by the creater of the show and the photographs. As long as there no intent to sell anyhing I see no copyright problem with the music. If we have a copyright lawyer among us - and I am sure we do, and we find out there is a problem, we could use only non-copyrighted music. I now find the slide-shows very boring to watch. They do not add anything to the images. I would like to see a mood created with music to enhance the images. Mark
MichaelChang
Apart from copyright issues, Mark, I think adding music to a slide show is a separate art form if it's to be done correctly. One would ideally want control over image display length, transition style, and other sorts of tools in editing software. If not, we'll mostly end up with music which is not artistically synchronized to the slide show, and lengths that are well under 1 minute if you consider 5 seconds per displayed image and typical numbers of images per folder. This might end up to be more annoying than the simple transition we now have.
sarah_fox
As a web designer, I make it a rule never to use music or other sounds. The reason: When a website comes alive with sound, the first response is generally to look for a way to kill it.
mike_stemberg
I think the only time I might 'tolerate' music with images would be when I expect some sort of audio-visual experience rather than a straight slide-show (with music added). I would expect to see things like for e.g. a mix of screen positions, multiple screens, a mix of stills with video clips, a sense of 3D sound, clever transitions (not the usual Power Point styles), and a sense of thematic development and movement within the piece of work. Naturally, an impeccable choice of soundtrack and an immaculate synchronicity with music would be absolutely essential too.
lex_jenkins
Check into the "podsafe" music model and see whether any participating sites offer a way to let you legally use the music in your slide shows. While the usages seem similar on the surface, don't assume that all podsafe music can be used the same way in other applications. But most podsafe sites provide FAQs and clear conditions for use. studor13
I've just started to play around with Picasa 3 which has a very good Make-Movie feature that lets you add video and audio to your photos. It also has some simple but excellent slide transition effects. One small problem though is that the audio track within a video will come through so you need another software to mute out the audio (MS Movie Maker) before bringing it into Picasa. I would actually just use Movie Maker, except that for some reason the version I have (v2.0) keeps crashing from time to time. They are both free, so give them a try.
