chad_homewood
I would like to know what is the major differences and or pros and cons of each style. I am shopping for the 80-200 2.8f nikon. I have a D200 body. It seems I can buy the push pull for less and there is more out there. Thank You Chad
ronald_moravec1
PP tend to get loose over time. They also tend to change focal length as you focus. Then again they are faster to operate. Rings are later lenses and perhaps are optically better. My 80/2000 4.0 is an excellent lens, but goes a bit soft in contrast and resolution at the long end like every Nikkor I have seen tests on. Supposedly one of the best in that range including the 2.8 models. My 55/200 Vr is the same at the long end.
chad_homewood
I will be shooting sports mainly, so would the push pull be better? Chad
ronald_moravec1
It is faster. But you can learn two rings also.
chad_homewood
So would the two ring lens have a faster autofucus because it is a newer model or is it the same as the push pull (80-200mm 2.8f) chad
joseph_wisniewski
The two rings definitely have the faster autofocus. They changed the gearing somewhere in the lifetime of the push-pull. I believe it was when they added the "D" function. Ronald wrote "My 80/2000 4.0 is an excellent lens" I'll bet it is. Which is bigger, you or that lens? My telescope is only about 2000mm f10, and it's over 100 pounds including the matching tripod.
gabesouza
I recently purchased a used 80-200 f/2.8 push/pull to use with my D80 for sports photography. I couldn't afford the two ring as much as I would have liked it, and I feel the push/pull is an adequate substitute. What is boils down to is that it still has a fast aperture, even though it's an older design, and the limit switch for focusing can improve the focusing speed. If you can do it I would get the two ring for faster focusing, but you won't have any disappointments if you need to get the push/pull. Good lens hunting! Gabe.
