Galen Rowell Nikon video

Recommended Posts

I just won a Galen Rowell video on eBay. He is talking about the N70, and how to get the best out of it. Hope it's

good...

Did Galen ever make any other videos for Nikon? What are they if so?

I really like Galen's work and stories, and as I have never seen him on TV before I am really looking forward to his

N70 lecture! I have loaded mine in preparation of great things!

Galen Rowell made several videos for Nikon in the 1990's. I bought a few of those as VHS tapes back then.

There is also a non-Nikon-sponsored video based on a seminar by Rowell and Frans Lanting. I also have that on two VHS tapes from about 10 years ago but a DVD version is now available:

As most of you know, Rowell and his wife Barbara passed away in a plane crash in September, 2002.

I have the N70 video - there is some of Galen shooting in it, but most of it is boring narrative about the camera

features by a Jack Perkins. I bought it for a few bucks after it had been in a local shop for too many years.

The Creative Outdoor Photography video is a much more interesting representation of how he worked.

I visited the Mountain Light Gallery in 2001 and apparently just missed him. I bought his "Inner Game of Outdoor

Photography" that day, and the sales clerk noticed that the one I picked up wasn't signed and found me a signed

copy.

I sat and watched some videos about him that were playing on a TV - I have no idea who they were produced by, but

I'd like to see them again.

I just looked on eBay and see that there is a Galen Rowell video titled "Mountain Light" - I've never heard of that one. It has a little Kodak emblem in the corner of the case/box, and the seller says it's from 1988.

I'd love to see it, but it has a Buy It Now price of $75.

Thanks for the link Shun - and thank you all for the replies. I get the feeling that these tapes will become collectable over time as Galen's work is as popular as ever and tapes are easily damaged - we need a DVD from Nikon with all their promo's - and I bet there are some clips of Galen on the cutting room too that would be good to see.

What other camera promo tapes are there? F5?

I have a copy of his book Inner Game of Outdoor Photography. It is a bunch of his articles from his time writting for OP. There are some really good lessons in it. He shows a lot of his true personality in the book. I wish I had the chance to meet him. I love his work and miss him. They say his wife was a wonderful person too.

Enjoy your purchase, even if Galen's face-time is limited.

Galen Rowell is one of my culture heroes. I had the pleasure of participating on what I believe was the first photography workshop he conducted. I enjoyed sitting next to him at dinner one night - the experience was akin sitting at the captain's table during a momentous sea voyage.

I have a signed, somewhat dogeared copy of Mountain Light, which I still consider to be one of the best books about nature/travel/adventure travel photography, although of course it predates digital photography. I think I purchased the book in Los Angeles, at one of Galen's slide shows. His presentations were the best I've ever seen, made with two images at once projected on two side-by-side screens.

My favorite slide show: on the left screen, images of people, on the right, photographs of mountain goats. Each mimicked the other: if there were four humans looking left, up a mountain on one screen, there were four goats doing the same on the second screen. If a mountain goat was mantling itself onto a rocky ledge, so was a human.

Somewhere, buried in a big box, I think I still have a tape of a Sunday morning series from ABC that included Rowell. Other programs in the series included the likes of Dewitt Jones - he merited two shows - and several other prominent photographers. As I recall, Galen took viewers with him on a walk in Yosemite; a highlight of the show was his visit to the base of Yosemite Falls to capture the early morning rainbow visible from the far side of the bridge spanning Yosemite Creek. I follow in his footsteps each spring. In that sense, he's still alive for me.<div>00RG4b-81847684.jpg.8c3e52587957498b1a5699028fd171fe.jpg</div>

I have the Mountain Light video on VHS tape. It is quite good for one viewing but not as good as his books. A bit too simple for my liking. I would certainly not pay $75 for it. I found it in a discount bin a few years back, cost about $10 or so. I have the Mountainlight book which is a real classic and well worth the money. The Inner Game book is also good.
