philip_roberts1
I have often mused on this question. Seems it stems back to the days of my Praktica MTL5 + 50mm lens as a teenager. It was my only lens! And I took some surprisingly good photos on it. I believe it was because the limitations made me work for every shot. So, in the nightmarish future, the thought police have moved in, Big Brother IS watching you, and the Totalitarian State of Photographica decrees that from this day forth everyone will only be allowed ONE lens for their camera, irrespective of the make. What would be your choice? On balance, I think a 50mm f1.8 or a 90mm f2.8 macro. Lets have some ideas!
ellis_vener_photography
35mm f/2 or 50mm f/1.
tomscott
If I had to have only one I would probably pick the 35-105 f/3.5 macro. Its the one I use most anyway.
john schroeder
17-55mm f2.8 because I don't have a 35mm f2

tmcleland
Well, since it basically hasn't left my camera since I bought it, it would have to be my Tamron 18-200 zoom; I can cover a lot of ground that way.
rainer_t
On a crop camera the 30/1.4. On a fullframe a 50/1.4. If big brother forces me to use something else (because primes are disallowed) the 17-85 IS on crop and the 24-105/4L on FF.

roger_smith4
On my 20D, a Tamron 17-50 2.8. If a different format, something equivalent how a 40mm lens looks on 35mm film.
rich_evans
35 f/1.4 or 50 f/1.
dougsmiley
For my N90s, it would be the 20mm f2.8 Nikkor.
d_f11
My Rokkor 35 f2.8. It's just right - just alittle bit wider than standard without significant perspective exageration.
milton-chris
Sigma 500/f2.8. If it's BIG Brother who descrres this, then I wana be able to get all the spy shots I want. Can always use the foot-zoom.
mendel_leisk
I'd be torn, between a normal zoom like the Canon 24-70 or 24-105, both of which I'm really starting to appreciate, and something like the Canon 50mm f1.4, except with better build quality. jmichaelc
I couldn't do what i do with only one lens....but IF i was forced, it would have to be a zoom, preferably the 24-70 F2.8. However, ideally, i would want one that covered 16mm-150 F2.8.
