angelo_barretto
I have an SB-20 Nikon Speedlight (I know, pretty antiquated flash). I acquired it in a lens estate sale and got a very good deal on the whole package. (3 lenses and the flash for $99.99!) Anyway, I'm kinda new to photography and I haven't quite gotten around to using flash in my photos yet. I usually utilize natural light and haven't felt the need to use flash just yet however I'd really like to incorporate it soon and learn how to use it. First of all, should I even keep it or sell it? I mean, it is old. I don't even know if it's strong (compared to the newer flashes). But will it do it's job? I tried it the other day though and it works great. Also, I'm going to be travelling next month to Asia. Is there a need for me to even bring the flash? I appreciate any input you can give me. :)
bsharpe411
Asking if you need to bring a flash is like asking if you need to bring an umbrella; and just as hard to answer. First off, without knowing what camera you're using, it's impossible to tell you whether or not you have a compatible flash. An old flash with high trigger voltage can fry a newer digital camera. Also, the trip you're planning is no time to learn about using a flash. I suggest you take both camera and flash to a photo shop and see what they recommend for your needs. The flash has to match the camera it's mounted on, and hopefully will give you enough automation to avoid a lot of over/under exposure. Enjoy the trip! lex_jenkins
The Nikon SB-20 is an interesting flash and shouldn't pose any problems with the current crop of SLRs or dSLRs. Here's a site with good info and illustrations: http://www.mir.com.my/rb/photography/hardwares/classics/nikonf4/flash/sb20/index.htm Take the flash on your trip. Even if you don't use the flash it won't take up much room. Who knows, it might make the difference between getting a memorable photo and passing up an interesting shot.
