sngreen
Just opened another ticket with Nikon. When I try to save TIFF file in Capture NX2 the dialog box "Current task" often says saving, but it is not going anywhere. Just sits in the middle of the screen with only option to cancel. I wait, and wait, and wait ... nothing happens. Does anyone know of a good solution that would allow me NOT to use NX2 EVER !? - sergey
Matt Laur
Are you saving the TIFF to a networked drive or external device that's slow? Do you have enough RAM to even run the app well (no less than 2GB, trust me).
sngreen
I am saving to the internal drive that has over 200G space left on a 3Gz 2core + 4G ram machine. I suspect it also has something to do with Vista, since the hdrives never stop spinning, but it is just as annoying nevertheless. I open 20 files at a time, save few till NX starts acting, close the application and start it again. Very frustrating. I only wish Nikon opened up their secrets so Adobe and others could produce identical results from the same files as well - I would never be bothered again. Another problem that has never really been solved (at least for me) is "Could not safe file Access to file denied" dialogs. Seems the only way to get around it is to keep the directory open and delete *.tmp file whenever the image file becomes "unsavable". Kind of kludgy way of working with modern software methinks. Anyways, just felt like venting out. Good ideas but duh so many problems! - sergey
bill_keane2
"Another problem that has never really been solved (at least for me) is "Could not safe file Access to file denied" dialogs." And version 2.0.1 HAS NOT fixed this. I have found, however, that repeated attempts will eventually result in a proper save. I like NX2. I has great potential, but there are bugs for sure. Matt Laur
Is there are reason to have 20 files open at once? I mean, you're only editing one at a time anyway, right? Just use NX's browser window so you can SEE all 20 files, and just drag the one you're playing with into the editing space. 20 RAW files is a lot of swap file manipulating on the part of the OS, lotsa RAM or not. Just try changing that workflow a bit, and I'll bet all sorts of things improve.
ed_ci
"NX2 Hanging" is what I would call it. I have experienced it too. But I am on a Mac PPC G5/5GB RAM and a Macbook Pro core2 duo /3GB RAM both on OSX 10.4 Both are running a trial of NX2. It happens to both of them. I am really hesitating shelling out money to purchase a buggy application. The hanging happens when I am saving either a TIFF or JPG from a D80 created NEF. Processing, editing, etc is very smooth and quick but saving out a different format leaves me in limbo. The only way out is to Force Quit and reopen NX2 and the image and do over. That really slows down the workflow. NX2 is great for image quality but if it takes an hour to export 1 jpeg that just does not cut it. My typical edits in NX2 are a WB tweek, crop and image resize - nothing extensive. I was going to start a thread asking if the Trial version could be the issue, but this thread seems to be about the same issue but on Windows. Any fixes known to address this hanging? ed_ci
Sergey, How do you "open a ticket" with Nikon? Do they work with you directly to troubleshoot OR is this just an online form that goes into Nikon's bug stack? I only have 2 days left on my NX2 trial. So am really on the fence. I might just have to use View to convert to JPEG without all the widgets of NX2.

A bit repetitive but works well when in a hurry. This is a very good advice you are giving. I must admit I never thought of using Capture's own browser. Just tried it and I see marked files remain marked in Capture as well. Will do it next time I use it.

- sergey

joseph_smith3
Two things to do that might help. Do you have all of the needed programs loaded to make NX2 work like Microsoft Framework? See here for more info: http://www.nikoncafe.com/vforums/showthread.php?t=176373 Cache files, I do not know what this means, but it might be part of your problem: http://www.photo.net/nikon-camera-forum/00Q7AZ Contact Jason for more info. My workflow is to keep only one Capture NX2 file open at a time. Once I finish it, I save it. Then I open the next file into NX2 from View NX. leif_goodwin8
I have the trial download of NX2, and to be honest though it is the best RAW converter for NEFs, it is the worst programme I have ever used. It crashes often. It slows down my PC. It is slow generally. Something is seriously bad, I am not sure I want to spend money on something so poor. I have also found that I can really only open 1 file at a time if I want it to be reliable.
ed_ci
Thanks Leif for sharing your experience. What you wrote above is exactly the same way I feel about Capture NX2. C'mon Nikon get this right! Please.
chamyat
"Another problem that has never really been solved (at least for me) is "Could not safe file Access to file denied" dialogs." I had the same problem for days, making me depressed, I was going to buy photoshop instead, but then I figured out it was related to the " threatfire" (cannot be sure of the name now) 'anti-bug" software that I loaded in the computer. When I deleted that software, saving run smoothly.
billy mitchell photography
Hello, I'm new here. I have been a full time photographer for over 45 years. That may or may not mean anything because things change fast. Anyway about Capture NX2. Capture does some things that the other software (Adobe and others) does not do. It writes directly to the RAW file. Other software writes a sidecar file. This is good for me because I like everything (including ratings, keywords, and editing) in one file with the image. It's easier to manage. But... It also means that the file takes time to write and if you have several writing a once it may overload or appear to or hang the computer. Especially on a large file. You can watch the indicator at the top of the image to see the updating icon. It is best to wait for that to quit to continue work. It's slow sometimes. Also if you change a file with Capture NX2 you cannot edit it with View NX. Once Capture has written to the raw file, View will not edit it. However if you edit the file first with View you can edit with Capture. You just can't go the other way. I do wish View and Capture played better together, but maybe they can't. Maybe they will later. I think this is super software for Nikon raw files (it works on tiff and jpg files too). I am a NIK fan and use all their products. Capture NX does things quickly and easily that would be a lot of work in Photoshop. You can see several video instructions on Capture NX2 at the NIK web site. tim_eastman
I am having a problem with rotated NEF files re-rotating after various corrections are applied, Exposure Compensation, for example. Although NX2 is capable of getting the best image quality from Nikon NEF files, it is just not worth the hassle. It sucks that Nikon holds us hostage, forced to use their crappy, buggy software to get the best out of our cameras. I debated whether to upgrade my CS2 so I could read D300 NEF's, and decided to try NX2 to see. Wrong move!
