joshroot
Howdy Classic Camera folks. I have changed the name of this forum slightly. As we move further and further along the photographic timeline, the "pre 1970" date designation was getting more and more useless. So the name of this forum is now "Classic Manual Cameras" with the goal that it encompass all cameras up to theelectronic/autofocus era. If it's manual, it has a home in this forum. Although, obviously, some camera systemsare probably better served in their respective forums (Canon FD, Leica, or Medium Format being good examples). But youget the point. summitar
I think this is a very wise decision. Under the prior definition, even a Nikon F2 was not a classic.
mark_medin
So now, if I have a Minolta manual focus question I come here and not to the Sony (ha ha) forum? Not that I cared to go there much anyway, having to pick through too much digital stuff to find if my question had been asked before. I believe eventually this area will turn into the 35mm film camera ghetto. It's bad enough to deal with certain sorts of brand snobbery as it is now. john_robison3
Since the mostly metal, manual cameras with mechanically timed shutters reached their peak in the early 70's this is a logical change.
dan_fromm2
Autoexposure came in well before 1970. Where can we discuss older cameras with that feature?
joshroot
<i>"Autoexposure came in well before 1970. Where can we discuss older cameras with that feature?"</i> <p> Is this a serious question? Come on. It's pretty obvious what cameras fit into the discussion realm here and which do not. Just take half a minute to read the threads.

User_503771
"Autoexposure came in well before 1970. Where can we discuss older cameras with that feature?" Uh, Josh, I think it was a serious question. The pre-1970 cut-off provided a known limit, however well or poorly it worked. I was going to ask a similar question myself. I assume from your response that, going by past threads and their general trends, we're now looking at pre-auto-everything and certainly no digital cameras, with some flexibility regarding dates of manufacture. So I assume that somebody posting the occasional aperture- or shutter-priority camera from the late-60s or early-70s has nothing to worry about. Now for the next thing: I'm all for it too. k5083
This is good. Josh made a reference to "medium format". I hope that classic (pre-1970, all-manual, or whatever you want to call it) MF cameras such as classic folders and TLRs still belong here, while the MF forum is still for not-so-archaic and digital MF, as in the past. joshroot
Medium format is medium format. If someone wants to ask about a classic folder in the Med Format forum, they are welcome to do so. Likewise, if someone wants to ask about a Hassy 500c here, I guess they are welcome to do so as well, after all, that camera was introduced in '57 or something like that. However, a user has to ask themselves "Where am I likely to get the best answer to my question?". I'd say that Hassy users are going to be more plentiful in the Med Format forum and folder users more plentiful in the Classic Forum. But that's just my opinion.
