How can there be anonymous ratings days after posting an image for critique?

I am curious. Images appear on the "Rate Photos" screen in a time line that is very near to the time that the image

was posted for Critique and Ratings. As far as I know, the only way to give an anonymous rating is to scroll through

images on this screen.

So how can an image receive new anonymous ratings days after the image was posted for critique?

Anyone know?

douglas,

i wonder if this is anything to do with the site policy of not showing rating below 3? sorry if you have been hit by the mystery poor rating. there are a lot of characters here who seem to make a habit of leaving low ratings without a proper critique.

I did not know that the site does not show rating below 3. Is this new? If this is true, how does that impact the

averages for Top Rated Photos?

In this case one of my images is actually ranking (uncharacteristically :) ) high. I noticed that I was getting more

anonymous ratings and was just curious how this can be done.

Douglas, how many days, specifically, did the new ratings show up after:

1. You uploaded the photo;

2. You submitted it for critiques/ratings?

I've never been able to run completely through every photo in the "anonymous" queue. Don't have that much time on my hands. But I suppose it's conceivable that someone determined to rate every available photo might be able to run through 'em, including those oldest in the queue.

The ratings lower than 3 are not, as of now, counted toward the rated photo in any way. Ratings of 1 and 2 don't figure into the sum, average or any other parameter I'm aware of. However, they are tallied on the publicly viewable ratings table for the person giving the ratings and appear to factor into that person's rating trends (average). Only admin can see which photos an individual actually rated lower than 3.

Since our publicly viewable pages show only the photos we have rated highest, there doesn't appear to be any way for others to determine which photos we've rated lower than 5, whether anonymously or attributed.

This is all based on my observations, not inside knowledge. I'm not an administrator and have no influence here.

When rating via the Rate Photos anonymous queue, it is now possible to filter by category. So if your photo was listed in a category that did not have a significant number of submissions during the past day or so, it is certainly probable that someone rating a lot of images in that particular category during a single session would eventually reach older submissions.

As an example, go to the Critique Forum (http://www.photo.net/bboard/forum?topic_id=1481) and filter for category "Cars and Vehicles". There are images there that were submitted almost a week ago, and there are only about 75 images total listed in that category. Anyone rating this category via a filtered Rate Photos queue (anonymous) would see those same images, presumably in the same sequence, and would not have to rate a lot of images before they were served the older ones in the queue (there were less than 10 submitted today).

Why would you want to do that? People are complaining about not getting *enough* ratings, not *too many* anonymous rates. And if you want to be displayed in the default views of the Top Photos pages, you need anonymous rates from the 'Rate Photos' queue (and to combat gaming the system, that's exactly how it should be).

To be perfectly blunt, and anonymous rating on day 4 is just as valid as an anonymous rating on day 1, or a direct rating on day 10.

Thank you all for your responses.
Michael, I think your response answers my question. Thanks. I did not know you could filter the Rate Photos area. In this way it would obviously be available for anonymous ratings even after a few days.

FYI the image that I posted is Cave son.
