larry n.
All of this talk of the D700 has made me realize what kind of a camera I really would like--and that's a D300 or a D80 with an improved sensor and other updates to make it current. Any news on that front?
michael_bradtke
How much newer do you want then a D300?
ray_du_bois
I agree with Micheal, the D300 replaced both the D200 and the D80(A D200 stuffed into a D70 body)
hans_janssen
I think there will be something like a D90 what is a plastic and slower D300 and more menu settings than on body controls, just as the D200 and D80.
Two23
I highly doubt the "D90" price point will be skipped by Nikon. It's crucial, and the camera would be a cheap one to make since most components were already designed for the D300. It will likely be out by the end of September. Nikon will want it in stock and being talked well before the Christmas buying season. Kent in SD
bob_flood1
My take on this: For those of us for whom photography costs money instead of making money, a $1700 D300 body is not really a replacement for a $750 D80 body. As much as I'd prefer the D300, my limited resources are going to better glass instead of the snazziest body because I can't afford both. The D40-D60 lineup is aimed at new users - those who do not already have a collection of older Nikon lenses. The D300/D3 range is for people who derive income from the cameras or have enough money to spend that much on a hobby. In between are a lot of people who are long time Nikon customers that already own an inventory of lenses they wish to keep using. That's the D70-D80 crowd. Nikon understands this, or they wouldn't have built the D70/80 in the first place. So we should expect another camera that will be an update to the D80 but less sophisticated than the D300. The timing depends on Nikon's internal resources (for developing and introducing new hardware), and D80 sales. The situation becomes more urgent for Nikon if they believe D80 owners are defecting to another brand, but since these are users with a brand loyalty to begin with, the D80 upgrade should be expected last (hence the new D60 and D700 before a D90 or whatever they choose to call it). nolan_ross
Nikon will not leave a gap between the D60 and the d300. Who knows what Nikon is going to do for sure but I would think the D80 will be replaced sometime with the D90. A good time in my mind would be just before Christmas. What the features will be like I am not sure. I imagine the D200 will drop off when existing supplies are sold since it has been replaced by the D300. sandysocks
Will it be DX, FX, or both?
jeffrey_prokopowicz
It will definitely be DX. The pixel density of DX sensors will keep increasing.
sandysocks
To me, a cheap version of the D700 makes more sense. The market is already glutted with DX cameras. I think Sony will make a cheap, basic no frills full-frame, and naturally Nikon will too. The 5D is about a hundred dollars away from being one. ShunCheung
In the last week or two, we already had a few threads speculating about any future successor to the D80. For example: http://www.photo.net/nikon-camera-forum/00Q1fO Naturally, nobody can post definitive answers to such questions. I suggest to those who are interested in this topic to pay attention to any possible announcements between the end of the Olympics and September 23, when Photokina begins.
