New lens from Canon

Well, it's about time. I'm not a fan of hyperzooms, and Canon's only other consumer-grade hyperzoom (the 28-200) is not well regarded even by the modest standards of hyperzooms. But I'm surprised they left this market to the third parties for so long.

...further specifications, images and price information are not yet available. I expect this will be popular as a vacation lens and as an alternative kit lens for the 1000D in particular. Nikon's similar offering is the one Canon have to match or beat - doing so will sell a lot of cameras, even if the purchaser never buys this lens, because it is a lens that many will aspire to.

I can hardly wait for the "Should I get the ef-s 18-55 and ef-s 55-250 or the ef-s 18-200" questions....

More choices, more confusion (but possibly more lens sales too!). Good move by Canon from the point of view of

marketing. If sold as a "kit" lens with the digital Rebels it could be quite popular if the price is right. It's the only lens

a lot of users might need.

I "wish" Canon would rebrand their tyro offerings. Like wineries do with 2nd labels. All the plastic, toy, beginner stuff chould be called something like "Canon-Lite"; or "Can-Not". Dreaming away as I can't find much of anything positive to say about this announcement except perhaps it's a Marketing Ploy.

As written by Bob Atkins, "good move" but let me add another adjective: late!

I've some relatives and friends that only chose Nikon due to its Nikkor AF-S 18-200mm VR zoom. Others chose Canon but opted for the Tamron 18-200mm or 18-250mm. They don't care a lot for IQ differences at the pixel level (I should do the same!) and, most of them, don't like to hang around with tones of gear or having to change lenses whenever they want a different point of view. I'm not a market connoisseur but if this tiny sample reflects in some way what's happening in global terms, then Canon are loosing quite a lot of money due to the absence of a hyper-zoom in its catalog. And the Sigma 18-200mm f3.5-6.3 DC OS (Optical Stabilizer) is already available...

Yup, sure is a good move, once again aimed at the P&S upgrader group? used to those zoom ranges, I wobder how many will get this lens and a 1000d and then ask `How to take wedding pix` Still now Ken they gotta start some where, maybe put a different coloured stripe on it :)

"I "wish" Canon would rebrand their tyro offerings" Such issues only matter for the image conscious, in which case

you should get a blad, wear an open shirt, hang a light meter round your neck, and call yourself Gustav. I use my

camera to take photos.

>> I don't see L in the name -- so who cares

I traded two L lenses (17-40/4 and 24-105/4 IS) for two EF-S lenses (10-22/3.5-4.5 and 17-55/2.8 IS) and am very happy that I did. I can now get wider angles, shallower DoF, faster AF and slower shutter speeds. Also, while BQ is slightly less, IQ is slightly more.

Also, my non-L 100/2.8 is slightly sharper wide open than my 70-200/2.8 IS L.

Unless you refer to supertelephoto, L is not unmatched.

Happy shooting,

Yakim.
