milton-chris
to everyone who asks the 'what lens should I buy' questions. And, of course, more of a thanks to those who take the time to answer those same questions. I have some money that I could choose to spend on gear, and have thought about either a nice set of L primes or a 500/f4. Or even a 5D and T/S lenses. And so, I've spent many hours over a couple of weeks, checking all the various things I can check in terms of reviews and pricing and everything else. And then I took some shots the other evening, and put some of my newly-learned Camera Raw skills to work and the answer to my questions hit me, smack in the face like a dead Cod-fish. It's just like everyone here says - if you can't figure out what you need, maybe you don't need anything. I gained some respect for my Sigma 17-70, and am now really happy for what it can capture. And I really don't need a 5D or T/S lenses or a bag of primes or a 500/F4. Nope, what I need more of is time shooting and really getting to know my 40D and general photography technical knowledge and skill, as well as brushing up on some specific shooting skills. And that money will sit in an investment account, waiting for me when I am ready and can actually say 'yeah, I'm gonna buy me that xxxxx, because this is what it will do for me that I can't do without it'. So thank you everyone. I think, for me, the biggest gift I have received from reading the responses to all the questions is probably that I can free up that part of my brain that has spent so many hours wondering 'well, if I just bought xxxx, then yyyyy would be so much better'. Sometimes it takes a while to sink in, when yer thick as a brick. Chris
apetty
Its a photographers moment of clarity. I have had it myself (although I want the toys, I know, I dont need them) I have felt better about my pictures since my moment of clarity, and I am improving. So I know how you feel

erictomenga
I have to echo Chris's thanks. The amount of knowledge I get from these forums is more than any other class or book I have read. I just don't know if I could hold off on upgrading my lenses if I had the opportunity to got to L glass. ;-) I still have a lot to learn and look forward to reading the suggestions and information here. jason_hall4
I am sure all of us have been there (I know I have) and unfortunately we go back from time to time (I know I do).
jason_hall4
Well said Yakim, I echo that. I should also say thanks to the folks here! This is a great resource. Jason
g dan mitchell
Yes! :-) I couldn't have said it better: "It's just like everyone here says - if you can't figure out what you need, maybe you don't need anything." (And I probably would have made someone very mad by responding to their request with such direct clarity.) I have a hunch that after you continue this focus (excuse me for that...) on optimizing the photographs you get with the gear you have that you'll eventually discover what tools might be most relevant to that pursuit. At that point you'll probably make some very wise purchase decisions. Take care, Dan
JDMvW
Although occasionally one of the responders gets a little testy (try typing a post in ALL CAPS, for example), it's nice to hear back from one of the original posters and hear what actually happened. KenPapai
There is no better resource for Canon EOS questions & answers than this forum. Every question will garner answers, and most of them correct (and not all answer with RTFM! ;). All of this quality is due to the unbending forum moderation by a constant source, Dr. Bob. ijespah
I'd like to add my thanks. As a total novice, I have found a lot of help, and great solace, as when my camera got dropped, in this forum. I am always astonished that people are so generous with their time in answering questions from people like me. Thank you. Isabel
chrisjb
I also agree with the Thanks to all, and add how enjoyable it is to actually see the improvements in the different galleries, and watch newcomers grow with knowledge then later see them answering the questions. Its the greatest learning tool I`ve ever seen.:)
dave_holland
I think your moment of clarity just moved you up a level or two, by the rockwell scale (grin). http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/7.htm Dave
