Start with cleaning the contacts of body and lens. If that does not help remove batteries (BP511 and backup) overnight. In the end: return trip to Canon. He probably doesn't even know there is an archive or how to search it without getting a life's work of reading. He has though presumably got a manual- and in that manual there will certainly be a section headed "error codes".. And it will tell him that code 99 is a case of the dreaded "other". Its not to do with the CF card and its not to do with the attachment of the lens. It could however be just about anything else, and its a hard call for anyone here to guess whats the problem.
